Ontheair nals with 14 points, Noah Zoppi added 11, and Co- rey Busta provided nine points and 12 rebounds in the win. Nikko Lobo led Oroville with 20 points as Bobby Jones and Bryce Brandt both chipped in 12 points. Brandt also had five steals on the night. Corning trailed 41-32 in the fourth quarter af- ter Oroville's Tavian Mc- Carter and Lobo hit back- to-back 3s off the glass. But a Hoag layup, a free throw from Zoppi and a pair of 3s from Wyatt Hay- don brought Corning back within 47-41. After Brandt snagged the ball and drew a foul, he'd sink both shots from the line for Oroville to lead 49-41. The Cardinals wouldn't stop as Hoag drained another layup and hit a 3 from the corner to trim Oroville's lead 49-46 before fouling out with 1:52 remaining in the game. As time ticked off the clock, Zoppi netted a la- yup and hit the free throw to complete a three-point play to tie the game 49-all. Corning's Calvin Ware hauled in a rebound after McCarter's 3 rimmed out. After a Cardinal's time out, Grine would get the foul call on his last second jumper, sending the junior guard to the line to make the deciding points of the game. "Those were big, those were clutch," Corning head coach Kurt Wilkins said. "(Grine) is a hell of a shooter, he's a leader and he's not afraid of the big moment. I think it's ironic because that's a kid I've been begging to shoot more all year long and he gets the opportunity to put us in the championship game with those throws." Oroville opened the game with a 16-5 lead af- ter the first quarter. Jones netted a pair of layups and Brandt found a lane through the paint for a la- yup and capitalized on a steal for another 2 points. However, the Cardinals defense held the Tigers to four points in the second quarter as Oroville went into the break with a 20-17 advantage. Over the final eight min- ute stretch, Oroville gained a 47-41 advantage, but Corning closed it out with a 10-2 run to move on for the D-IV title game. "We missed a cou- ple chippies there at the end, couple shots we nor- mally knock down," Oro- ville head coach Rob An- derson said. "Defensively we played pretty well but a couple of bad possessions and a couple of times we didn't stop them on de- fense, it hurts." Corning looks ahead to take on Gridley, a team that beat the Cardinals twice in December. "We never quit, we battle and we know how to win. It doesn't matter, you just keep playing the game and fight until the game's over until you gotta go home, but we're not going home," Wilkins said. "We're going to keep playing the way we play and battle for 32 min- utes and just keep playing until we're on top." ConnectwithSports Writer Sharon Martin at 896-7778. Corning FROM PAGE 1 EMILY BERTOLINO — ENTERPRISE-RECORD Corning High's Corey Busta rushes down court to block Oroville High's Bryce Brandt's shot as they challenge each other in a semifinal game Wednesday at Oroville High. lief when his chip on the par-5 8th — his 17th of the day — stopped inches from the hole, leaving him a tap-in birdie. "I hit a lot of good shots, made some good putts and just drove it well, enjoyed the day. It was a good day." Danny Willett, Adam Scott, Jason Dufner and Charley Hoffman were all two shots back of Piercy, each carding 68s. World No. 1 Jordan Spieth was in a group another shot back, three off the pace at 3 un- der, and said that even on a relatively calm day by Doral weather standards, it felt like a grind. "It always is here," Spi- eth said. "And this would be a day that should play about as easy as it possi- bly can with just a 5- to 10-mile-an-hour breeze. The standard wind here I think. Still, the scores aren't extremely low." Spieth was in a featured group, with world No. 2 Jason Day and No. 3 Rory McIlroy with him. McIlroy shot 1 under, Day finished at even par. "Human error, unfortu- nately," Day said. "I wish I could hit it in the center of the golf club all the time but sometimes I'm like an amateur and I hit it in the parts where we're not sup- posed to. But that's how it is." Piercy spent eight hours on the range Monday work- ing on a change to his backswing and saw im- mediate results, making seven birdies in his first 11 holes. Being atop a World Golf Championships lead- erboard on Sunday is far different than on a Thurs- day, but it's a most positive sign for Piercy — a three- time winner on tour who shot better than 66 only once in his first 24 stroke- play rounds in WGC events. "We all know we're try- ing to beat those guys week-in, week-out," Piercy said. "They have proved it. I haven't proven it week- in, week-out, but when my game's there I'm pretty de- cent. We all know they are there. They are looking at my name today. So maybe they will do it tomorrow." Past winners at Doral struggled a bit. Defending champion Dustin Johnson shot an even-par 72, put- ting him in a tie for 28th. And 2014 winner Patrick Reed could get nothing go- ing, his 5-over 77 beating only three other players. Mickelson won on the previous version of the Blue Monster, a course he knew as well as anyone. And Thursday showed he's got a chance to do just fine on the redesign as well. "I'm not going to com- plain," Mickelson said. LEE GRABS SHARE OF LEAD IN SINGAPORE Australian teenager Minjee Lee, see- ing things clearer than ever after a chance visit to an optometrist, took a share of the lead with Taiwan's Candie Kung at the LPGA's Women's Champions tour- nament in Singapore. Lee made four birdies and an eagle in her open- ing round of 5-under 67 to join Kung at the top of the leaderboard on a windy day at the Sentosa Golf Club. The defending cham- pion, South Korea's Inbee Park, was among a group of four players tied for third at 4-under 68, while the world No. 1 Lydia Ko and in-form American Lexi Thompson both shot rounds of 1-under 71. Already one of the brightest prospects in the game after winning her first LPGA title last year, Lee has just started wear- ing contact lenses after learning her vision was slightly out of focus. The 19-year-old only found out about the prob- lem after undergoing a rou- tine eye test as part of a mandatory medical screen- ing ahead of this year's Rio Olympics. "The optometrist said two years it's been deteri- orating. She said my brain was just so used to it,' Lee said. "I was like, okay. But now I can see like really, re- ally clearly." Lee birdied two of her first four holes then eagled the par-5 12th when she reached the fringe of the green with a 5-wood then drained a 30-foot putt. She birdied the 13th and dropped a shot at the 17th after an errant tee shot but made amends with a birdie at the last. "I was just really steady. I tried to just minimize my mistakes and try and miss in the right spots," she said. "Yeah, just when I hit it close, take advantage of my opportunities. So that's where I made my birdies." Kung, playing the back nine first, also eagled the 478-yard 12th and had five birdies in total but bogeyed two of her first six holes. The 34-year-old spent much of the off-sea- son in the gym to improve her strength and flexibility and said the extra work has added some 20 yards to her distance off the tee. "I know there was some- thing missing in my game," she said. "We were able to sit down and look at it and work on it." Park won the title in Southeast Asia last year without making a single birdie in 72 holes but the world No. 2's streak came to a halt with her only bogey of the day, on her 17th hole. "It was going to come at some point," she said. "It's actually nice to get it over with today." Ko had a frustrating day, parring her first 10 holes before dropping a shot on the 11th but she knocked in two late birdies to finish in red figures.
