StaffReports OROVILLE Despiteastrongstart Thursday night, the Red Bluff Lady Spartans girls' basketball team faded down the stretch to fall to the No. 4 seed Las Plumas Thunderbirds 56-47 in Oroville, ending their postseason. The No. 5 seed Spartans jumped ahead early and took a 27-22 lead into halftime. They would hold onto that lead until the final frame, when the Thun- derbirds caught fire, putting up 20 and holding the Spartans to just six points, for the win. Kylee Kitchell led the scoring for the Spartans with 19 points and 14 rebounds for a double-dou- ble, an assist and two steals. Jesse Miller put up 11 points and had 10 rebounds, for her own double-double, two assists and four steals; Allyson Drury had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals and Maggie Winning had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. With just two seniors on the 12-girl roster, the Spartans (9- 16 overall, 3-9 league) pin their hopes on the future after a dis- appointing season — and with good reason. Miller, a freshman, was second in the league in double-doubles, with eight, and blocks per game at 1.8. She was third in the league in assists per game with 3.2. Kitchell, a sophomore, was fourth in the league in double- doubles, with six, and fifth in re- bounds per game with 7.9. Sophomore Winning was fifth in the league in assists per game with 2.9 and Drury, a junior, was fourth in the league in points per game with 11. GIRLS PAGE 2 Staff Reports The Red Bluff Bulls Ameri- can Legion baseball teams will be taking sign-ups for the 2016 summer season from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Me- morial Hall in Red Bluff. Players from throughout Te- hama County are eligible to par- ticipate. American Legion Post 167 is sponsoring teams for ages 13-18. A $25 deposit is required to par- ticipate in tryouts. The deposit is refundable, if a player is not cho- sen for one of the teams. The Red Bluff Bulls play against American Legion teams in games and tournaments throughout the north state and beyond from late May to early August. Mandatory player tryouts are scheduled for noon Sunday, March 6, at the Red Bluff High School baseball field. A makeup tryout is at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 7.
