I
considered attending some of the more re-
cent events at the chapter house, such as
Homecoming, but that just didn't happen. It
would have been good to see Carl Thurnau '57
again as well as Chuck Hodges '55 and Bob
"Smiley" Boehringer '55, who frequently at-
tend and whom I know well. In fact, Smiley was
my Big Brother.
Unfortunately, I left RPI after my sophomore
year due to financial reasons. My parents just
didn't have the resources for me to continue,
even with my job during the school year. I
started working in R&D at Teletype Corp., in
the Chicago area, which was part of the Bell
System. I married the love of my life, started
a family, and continued my education through
night school at the Illinois Institute of Technol-
ogy where I obtained a bachelor's degree in me-
chanical and aerospace engineering. After that,
I continued at Loyola Graduate School of Busi-
ness for an MBA. I spent a total of 13 years at
night school—definitely not the preferred way
to do it. In the late '70s and early '80s, I spent
several years as a product manager at AT&T cor-
porate headquarters in New Jersey and then the
breakup of AT&T started. I returned to the R&D
at Teletype which then merged into AT&T Bell
Laboratories. I retired from Bell Labs as a de-
Ray and his wife, Fay, during
a recent trip to Yosemite.

partment head in 1990 after 35 years in the Bell
System, after which I did some consulting for a
few years before retiring completely.
My wife, Fay, and I continue to enjoy our retire-
ment years at our home in Naperville, Ill., a west-
ern suburb of Chicago, where we enjoy our many
friends, church, volunteering, the health club, an
active community, and occasional travel.
