ByDenisD.Gray The Associated Press TRACH,CAMBODIA It'sbeen a busy morning for Cletus, Meynard, Victoria and oth- ers of their furry band. Tiny noses and long whiskers twitching, they've scur- ried and sniffed their way across 775 square meters (8,300 square feet) of fields to eliminate a scourge that has killed thousands of Cambodians: land mines. Meet the Hero Rats: in- telligent, surprisingly ador- able creatures with some of the most sensitive noses in the animal kingdom. Sent from Africa, where they successfully cleared mine- fields in Mozambique and Angola, they began the same task in northwestern Cambodia early this month and have already scored tangible results. Two hectares (4.4 acres) have been declared mine- free around this village where more than 15 peo- ple have been killed or wounded by the explosives, forcing some to abandon their homes and rice fields and seek jobs elsewhere. One villager, Khun Mao, says the rats have been sniffing for suspected mines in a rice field he had been afraid to cultivate for years. He says that while it is too soon to say whether the ro- dents can remove every mine, "To me, these rats are wonderful." "The villagers have started to get excited about farming their land again. You can see the light in their faces," says Paul Mc- Carthy, Cambodia pro- gram manager for the Bel- gian nonprofit organization APOPO, or Anti-Person- nel Land Mines Detection Product in English. On a recent morning, the African giant pouched rats were working two sus- pected, taped-off mine- fields. Each rodent wore a harness connected to a rope strung out in a straight line between two handlers standing about 5 meters (15 feet) apart and outside the danger zone. The ro- dents then darted from one handler to the other, con- stantly sniffing the ground and only taking time out to scrub their bodies with tiny front paws or to answer nature's call. The handlers moved a step or two down the field to repeat the pro- cess, and a second rat was later sent over the same ter- rain to double check. Two-year-old Victoria proved particularly swift — "very active," one team member calls her. She stars in APOPO's "adopt-a-rat" fund-raising drive. At the second field, Merry and Meynard were complet- ing three hours of effort as a midday sun beat down on the parched earth. The duo had earlier nosed in on an explosive, halting just above it and scratching the ground — the learned re- sponse when a rodent de- tects TNT inside a land mine. A deminer with a detector followed and the mine was dug up and det- onated. Unlike standard mine detectors, the super-sniff- ers pick up only TNT and not other metal objects. And unlike wage-earning humans, the rats work for peanuts — and their other favorite, bananas. Theap Bunthourn, oper- ations coordinator for the 34-member team, cited other advantages of using rats: They are cheaper to ac- quire and train than mine- sniffing dogs and easier to transport. Rats, averaging 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds), are also too light to detonate a pressure-activated mine, though dogs avoid that dan- ger by staying a few feet away from the explosives they detect. Each rat can clear an area of 200 square meters (2,150 square feet) in 20 minutes, something a tech- nician with a mine detec- tor would take 1 to 4 days to complete. Their sense of smell is so keen that in Af- rica they are also used to de- tect tuberculosis in human sputum samples at a rate much faster than the stan- dard laboratory method. EXPLOSIVES Smartratssniffoutminefields By Zeina Karam The Associated Press BEIRUT Russian Presi- dent Vladimir Putin spoke Wednesday with key play- ers in the Syria conflict, in- cluding President Bashar Assad, ahead of a U.S.- Russia-engineered cease- fire, as the opposition voiced concerns that the truce due to begin later this week will only bene- fit the Syrian government. Government troops backed by Russian war- planes waged fierce bat- tles to regain control of a strategic road southeast of Aleppo from the Islamic State group. The extrem- ist group seized the town of Khanaser and surrounding hillsonTuesday, cuttingthe main land route to Aleppo. The state-run news agency said 18 people were killed in IS shelling of gov- ernment-held neighbor- hoods in the city over the past 24 hours. The truce agreement, which is set to take effect at midnight Friday local time, does not cover the Is- lamic State group, Syria's al-Qaida branch known as the Nusra Front, or any other militia designated as a terrorist group by the U.N. Security Council. It's not clear exactly where along Syria's compli- cated front lines the fight- ing would stop and for how long — or where counter- terrorism operations could continue. Also unresolved are how breaches in the truce would be dealt with. It remains shaky at best and major questions over enforcement are still un- resolved. In a further reflection of the complicated terrain, Turkey's president said Wednesday that a U.S.- backed Syrian Kurdish mi- litia group — which Turkey regards as a terror organi- zation — should also be kept outside of the scope of the agreement. Turkey has in the past few weeks been shelling the group known as the People's Protection Units, or YPG, in northern Syria. The comments by Pres- ident Recep Tayyip Erdo- gan suggested Turkey may not stop bombarding the group, which has been a key fighting force against IS. Addressing dozens of lo- cal administrators in An- kara, Erdogan also voiced serious concern that the proposed truce will strengthen Assad and lead to "new tragedies."
