"And their other guys are not bad, either." Miami didn't have Wh- iteside — the NBA's leader in blocked shots — for its first meeting with Golden State this season, a 111- 103 loss in which the Heat trailed by only three enter- ing the final quarter. The Heat won't have Chris Bosh on Wednesday, the All-Star forward sidelined while he determines if he can re- turn to the court this sea- son after a new bout with a blood clot. Still, Wade is looking forward to Wednesday. "We get the champs coming in," Wade said. "These are the games you want to play in." Heat FROM PAGE 1 Led by senior Perry El- lis, Kansas ranks sixth in adjusted offensive effi- ciency (118.8) and 21st in defense (94.5) against Ken- Pom's fifth-toughest sched- ule. And the Jayhawks rank fourth in 3-point shooting (42 percent). They've also beaten Oklahoma (twice), West Virginia and Kentucky, one of this year's No. 1s. Maryland Sophomore Melo Trim- ble leads five double-fig- ure scorers for the 10th- ranked Terrapins, who rank 14th in adjusted de- fensive efficiency (93.6) and 12th in free-throw shooting (76 percent). But they lack high-end wins outside of beating Iowa in KenPom's 49th- toughest schedule. They also lost last week to a Min- nesota team that was 0-13 in the Big Ten. Michigan State The Spartans stumbled from No. 1 as Denzel Valen- tine recovered from a knee injury, but they're rolling now. They're tied with North Carolina for fourth in ad- justed offensive efficiency (119.4), lead the country in rebounding margin (plus- 11.6), rank second in assist- to-turnover ratio and third in 3-point shooting (42 per- cent). The sixth-ranked Spar- tans have beaten Kansas, Louisville and Maryland, though their overall sched- ule strength ranks a group- low 53rd. North Carolina The preseason No. 1 team scores, takes care of the basketball (third in as- sist-to-turnover ratio) and hits the glass (17th in re- bounding margin) with possibly the nation's deep- est roster. But are the sev- enth-ranked Tar Heels tough enough to defend and finish? Their five losses have come by 17 points. That includes last week's home loss to undermanned Duke, though they routed then-No. 11 Miami days later. "It's a veteran team that I keep thinking, 'We're go- ing to get it, we're going to get it a little bit better,'" coach Roy Williams said this month. "You never know with kids." Oklahoma The third-ranked Soon- ers have a strong case be- hind star guard Buddy Hield. Facing KenPom's sec- ond-toughest schedule, they're 12th in adjusted offensive efficiency (117.9) and 17th defensively (94) while shooting a national- best 43.1 percent from 3-point range. Oklahoma blew out Vil- lanova in December but fell twice to Kansas and re- cently lost three of four be- fore beating West Virginia last weekend. "Oklahoma is proba- bly the hardest personnel to guard, I think, because all of them can go get their own," Kansas coach Bill Self said this month. Villanova Current No. 1 Villanova and Virginia are the only teams in the top 15 of both of KenPom's adjusted effi- ciency ratings. The Wild- cats rank 15th offensively (116.5) and fourth defen- sively (91), while their guard-led lineup makes a national-best 78.1 percent of free throws. The blemish? They lost measuring-stick noncon- ference games with Okla- homa and Virginia by dou- ble figures in KenPom's No. 33-ranked schedule. Virginia Tied for third in this week's AP Top 25, the Cav- aliers separate themselves by doing a lot of things well. Ledbytwo-waystarMal- com Brogdon, they're 14th in adjusted offensive effi- ciency (117.3) and sixth de- fensively (92). They're the only team from this group in the top 20 of those cat- egories along with 3-point shooting (41 percent), free- throw shooting (75 percent) and assist-to-turnover ra- tio, too. The Cavs also beat Vil- lanova and West Virginia in KenPom's 11th-toughest schedule. Their only losses in the past month have come at Duke and Monday at Miami by a combined four points. "Every single game we want to take a step for- ward because we know it's getting closer to March and we want to start play- ing our best ball," junior London Perrantes said last week. "And I feel like we're starting to get into that stride." Xavier Fifth-ranked Xavier ranks in the top 25 of KenPom's adjusted offen- sive (114.3) and defensive (94.1) efficiency rankings. The Musketeers are also 14th in rebounding mar- gin. But they've played Ken- Pom's 48th-toughest sched- ule. They have one win against an RPI Top 25 team to tie Villanova for fewest in this group — and the Wildcats' win came by 31 against the Musketeers. Their rematch is Wednes- day. College FROM PAGE 1 Indeed, a second straight championship is the only way to make this a truly successful season, but the pursuit of Chicago's record — accomplished during the height of Michael Jordan's six-titles-in-eight-years dy- nasty — has provided quite an intriguing side plot to the regular season. On their last long road trip of the season, the Warriors have bounced back impressively from their worst loss of the sea- son, a 137-105 drubbing at Portland last Friday. They knocked off the Clippers in Los Angeles the following night, then made the cross- country trek to Atlanta to face the struggling Hawks, who had the best record in the East a year ago but have slipped this season. "We just seem to re- spond every time we get a loss," coach Steve Kerr said. "Our guys are very compet- itive, so when we lose, they get angry and seem to rat- tle off a bunch of wins in a row. That's a pretty good sign. We don't have to mo- tivate them much. They motivate themselves." Golden State has three more games on its road trip. Next up is Miami on Wednesday, followed by Orlando the following night and Oklahoma City on Saturday. If the Warriors get through that stretch un- scathed, Chicago's record of 72-10 will be very much in reach. Seventeen of their last 24 games are at Oracle Arena, where Golden State is 24-0 this season. There are still two games left at San Antonio (47-9), which is also having a remarkable season and trails by just 3 games in the Western standings, and two other tough road contests at Dal- las and Memphis. The other away games during that closing stretch are at Utah and in Los An- geles against the woeful Lakers. Of course, the Warriors didn't get to this point by looking too far down the road. They're having too much fun on the journey. "We're not complacent," Curry said. "We're trying to get better and find dif- ferent ways to win games. We're staying in the mo- ment." Kerr insists his team never talks about Chica- go's record, or the little milestones along the way like 50 wins. But it's clear this team is doing everything possi- ble to ensure it will be men- tioned in the same conver- sations with MJ's Bulls. Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, who attended Monday's game and stopped by the Warriors' locker room afterward to offer congratulations, was hesitant to compare two re- markable squads. "It's a different style of game," said Mutombo, who played against the Bulls when Jordan was in his prime. "It's a different era."
