BytheRev.DallasDubke "Youhypocrites! You keep screaming life, yet your actions speak death," trumpets Jesus to those who judge Him and their brothers. But why should we expect oth- erwise? Think about it. Who will determine the value of human life if its value depends on our wa- vering opinion. Who de- termines that value of life apart from the Creator, the author of that life? Some time has passed since the slaughter of nine at Umpqua Commu- nity College in, Roseburg, Oregon. But time will never completely repair the broken hearts and homes of those whose loved ones are no lon- ger coming home to their families. These actions have led many people, including our President, to more vigorously advocate for stricter gun control laws. But I ask why, when with the same breath, he be- stows a death sentence upon the most defense- less of all. I find it ironic, the outrage, the postur- ing of those who point to guns as being the cause of so many murders in our nation, when all they need do is look no further than their nearest corner abortion clinic. There the tools of much darker tor- ture and death await — suction hoses, saline poi- son, scalpels, forceps — all waiting for little babies, who will be torn, with si- lent screams, from what was once their mother's safe, warm womb. Since abortion became legal, the lives of 50 million lit- tle-ones have been snuffed out. 3,300 are killed with no mercy each day. 50 of those killed per day are seven months old or older, infants able to survive outside of the womb just as my son born in the lat- ter part of his 7th month. Even now, a bill has passed through Congress known as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Pro- tection Act (HR 3504) that will protect a child who survives an abortion from her throat being slit post-birth by an abortion- ist, but, our enraged-by- gun-violence president re- fuses to sign said bill. His reason? He stated that it would have a 'chilling ef- fect' on women's health- care providers. So I ask you, was it the availability of guns that led to the murder of so many students at the Umpqua Community Col- lege or the belief that hu- man life has little or no value? When our Heavenly Fa- ther and Creator is left out, all we're left with is theoretical evolution. At its core, evolution tells us humans evolved from chemical sludge into peo- ple, a product of pure, randomized chance. Throughout the years of struggle and death only the fittest were meant to survive. Evolutionary the- ory supports death and dying as the means to a stronger, better suited species. We follow Darwin who advocated the inferior- ity of women to men and blacks to whites. We fol- low Hitler who, using Darwin's ideas, advocated the destruction of the Jews, people who were of no value to him because they were holding back the process of evolution. Many of these evolution- ists have even suggested that the planet would be better served if there were fewer human beings. We are taught day to day in the classroom, that we are captains of our own fate. This means we must survive, even if it means taking life and death matters into my own hands. This young man who considered cer- tain students to be a threat to his happiness was following in the foot- steps of this philosophy. Students who are a per- ceived threat, a little baby in the womb, or an el- derly person — these lives hold little value. We find a common theme. Life is cheap! But it doesn't have to be this way. Thanks be to God, Jesus proved human life has immeasurable worth. When he came from His throne in heaven to die on our behalf and rose triumphant three days later, He proved once and for all that human life is worth something — everything. All we need is to place our trust in Him. "For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:40) When God is brought back into the equation, everything changes. We are given worth and pur- pose and hope. There is a future to look forward to and a present to change the world in. Imagine the future in which our na- tion turns back to God and lives according to His love and truth? This is a future that affirms life and every person's value no matter their age, race, or ability. As a nation we need to place ourselves back under His plan and provision once more. Pray that this becomes a real- ity once more. "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:27) InJuly1982theRev. Dallas Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Corning where he has served for the past 30 years. A Michigan native, his interests include wrestling, Judo, chess, mountain climbing and biking. He is married with four children.
