CENTRAL VALLEY 55, CAR- DINALS 52 The Corning Cardinals lost a close game Tuesday night on the road against the league-leading Central Valley Falcons in Shasta Lake, 55-52. As of 5:40 p.m. Wednes- day, no individual stats had been posted. The Cardinals (12-12 overall, 4-5 league) are scheduled to close out the regular season Friday, when they host the Ander- son Cubs (19-6 overall, 7-2 league). Girls FROM PAGE 1 through," Kevin Harvick said. "For me, I wanted it to happen as openly and as quick as possible because I didn't want it to linger and have things be brought up that really didn't need to be brought up and cause ten- sion between teams. "That was my ultimate goal. I'm not going to sit around and pinch pennies just because of the fact I think I'm being treated unfairly. I want to just be treated fairly. That was re- ally all that I was looking for. I felt like our team did that." Two years ago, drivers wanting a larger voice in in- dustry issues created a text chain that allowed them to vent and debate solutions. At the time, their biggest concern was the direction of the on-track product. Over time, their confi- dence grew and they asked to be heard on competition matters. They also wanted to know what was going on behind the scenes with their bosses and the NAS- CAR brass. It led to a cre- ation of an elected driver council. Last year's inaugural 10-member council in- cluded Hamlin, Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray and Jeff Gordon. Because NASCA R trimmed the field by three cars to 40, the driver coun- cil was cut to nine this sea- son. Gone are Bowyer, Bif- fle, McMurray and Gordon, replaced by Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson and cur- rent NASCAR champion Kyle Busch. The council is taking some credit for the creation of a new overtime rule in- stituted this year, and the drivers hope their collec- tive voice will ensure all of them get proper compensa- tion under the new charter system. "It's starting to show its potential. I think trying to get all the other drivers to understand that it is im- portant is crucial," Earn- hardt said. "The council that we have, they're not the nine smartest guys. They're just the guys that drivers voted for to repre- sent them because we need a small group so that the voice is clear instead of having 43 drivers in there or whatever. That would be pretty noisy and messy." NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 JOHN RAOUX — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Kevin Harvick answers questions at NASCAR media day at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Florida. of the world rankings now, we like to play quite a bit. ... It's great to be able to play week in and week out against some of the best fields in the world. You want to challenge yourself, and you want to test your- self against the best that's out here. "I think we'll see that happen here, and then ob- viously as we move into Florida." Even so, Augusta is on his mind. McIlroy had all the at- tention on him last year during the weeks leading to the Masters as the un- disputed No. 1 player in the world going after a third straight major and a chance to complete the ca- reer Grand Slam. Now he's one of three battling for No. 1 in the world. McIlroy slipped back to No. 3 this week behind Day. When he won the Match Play last year, he told about a ritual of going to the Of- ficial World Golf Ranking website to see the size of his lead at No. 1. Now, he doesn't look at the ranking as much. He knows he's not No. 1. "I will check them. I saw that Jason overtook me last week," he said. "Need a cup of coffee to perk me up af- ter it." Given the strength of fields over the com- ing weeks, McIlroy has a chance to change that. "It's still a big deal," Mc- Ilroy said. "Look, even if you're a player or a fan, anyone wants to know who the best golf is in the world. It's important to me. I'm not really competitive in much other things, but this I'm very competitive and want to try and get back there as fast I can." So is Spieth, who has his own love affair with Riv- iera. Spieth said he was torn between going to college at Texas or USC when he was in high school (he eventu- ally chose Texas), and one of the perks of the Trojans was having a playing mem- bership at Riviera while he was in college. He played on an exemp- tion as an amateur in 2012 and missed the cut when he missed a 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole. He was three shots behind going into the final round in 2014 until closing with a 71. And a year ago, he made bogey trying to make birdie, and it wound up keeping him out of a playoff. Throw in the NCAA ti- tle that Texas won at Riv- iera in 2012, and Spieth fig- ures he has played Riviera as much as any PGA Tour course outside the state of Texas. "It's one of my favor- ites in the entire world," he said. McIlroy sounded as though he was ready to join the fan club. James Hahn won last year in a playoff after he, Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey finished at 6-under 278. Only the U.S. Open last year (5 un- der) had a higher winning score to par. "It's a real treat when you come to a golf course like this where it's not overly long, you don't have to really bomb it off the tee, but it's real strategic," Mc- Ilroy said. "You've got to place your ball on the right sides of the fairways. You have to make sure you hit it to the right side of the greens. You can't really get it above the pin."
