At 9:40 p.m. the jury in the case of Frank Goo- drum, charged with as- sault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit murder, returned a verdict of assault with a deadly weapon, the lesser of the two charges. Goodrum took the ver- dict without any sign of emotion, although he had shown considerable emo- tion during the course of the trial and during clos- ing arguments. Sentence will be passed Friday morning at ten o'clock. He was accused of at- tempting to shoot his wife, from whom he had sepa- rated, on the night of De- cember 20th. After consuming the entire day attempting to prove that Frank Goo- drum, defendant on a charge of assault with in- tent to commit murder, was temporarily insane as the result of excessive use of alcoholic liquor, the defense was practically wiped out by Judge Elli- son when he instructed the jury with reference to their verdict. The defense was apparently unaware of a recent decision of the higher court with refer- ence to such a case, and insisted their defense was sufficient to excuse the de- fendant on the grounds of insanity. — Feb. 16, 1916 100 YEARS AGO... CORNING PATRIOTS Local man to kick off campaign Thursday The Tehama County An- imal Care Center is issuing vouchers to the public to as- sist with the spaying of all female cats. These vouchers will as- sist low income clients, in the hopes that these ser- vices will prevent unwanted litters of kittens. The "Beat the Heat" event will help spay 50 cats this month, in honor of Spay Day USA on Feb. 23. Persons interested in a voucher must qualify as low income, and complete a qualification form at the Tehama County Animal Care Center office. Vouchers must be picked up in per- son and cannot be reserved over the phone. There are a limited number of vouch- ers available, and they will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. "We are very grateful to have received a CDFA grant again this year, to assist low income clients within our county to spay their animals," said Ani- mal Care Center Manager Christine McClintock. "Pet overpopulation is a huge problem in Tehama County, especially in cats. Last year alone, less than 2 percent of the stray cats that came in were returned to their owners. We are hoping that by preventing unwanted litters of kittens, we can better prevent the number of unwanted cats in the shelter." To be eligible to receive a voucher, cats must be current on vaccinations — including rabies. For more information on low income vaccination clinics, call the Tehama County Animal Care Cen- ter at 527-3439.
