A : The concept originated as part of Martin's weekly NBC comedy-variety show before the "Roasts" became stand-alone specials, so on that basis, Johnny Carson was the first roastee (in January 1973). Once the separate specials began, Bob Hope was the first subject (in October 1974), and those continued until Michael Landon was the final guest of honor — for the second time (in July 1984). We actually attended the taping of that last "Roast" at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the dais included such longtime Landon associ- ates as Lorne Greene, Melis- sa Gilbert and Merlin Olsen.
