FOOTHILL 74, SPARTANS 59 Despite jumping ahead early, the Red Bluff Spar- tans lost on the road Wednesday night to the Foothill Cougars, 74-59. The Spartans finished the first quarter with a lead of three before the Cougars turned up the heat, send- ing the Spartans into half- time down by three. In the second half the Spartans couldn't keep pace. As of 6 p.m. Friday no individual stats had been posted for the game. The Spartans (6-16 over- all, 1-9 league) were sched- uled to host the league- leading Enterprise Hornets (16-7 overall, 8-1 league) on Friday The Spartans will fin- ish their season at home against the Chico Panthers (14-9 overall, 5-4 league) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19. Boys FROM PAGE 1 face," forward Deven Mack recalled. "He looks like an absolute killer." Usually quiet in the timeout huddle, Curry spoke up after an exasper- ated Lackey told the ragtag team he was out of ideas and didn't know what to do. "Give me the ball," the scrawny 13-year-old said, promising a win. "No hint of a joke on his face," forward Casey Field recalled. "You heard him," Lackey told the other Saints. "Any time you get your hands on the ball, pass to Steph." Curry hit a 3-pointer and then after stealing the ball hit another one from long range. A third straight 3-pointer for Curry made it nine of his team's final 12 points, as he delivered the knockout blows in one of his early masterpiece games. The final score was 54- 48, with Curry finishing with 44 points and younger brother Seth Curry adding four points. "Yours truly was the one who hit the other 3-pointer," said Field, who still remembered he had the other six points in the box score. "My claim to fame." Queensway went on to finish the season 16-0 de- spite being completely un- accustomed to the role of basketball powerhouse. The court at the school had rubber flooring. Any- one who wanted to join the team could do so at the K-12 school with no more than 25 kids per class. In one of the team's first practices, Curry drove to the basket as a teammate watched and had his hands down when suddenly a be- hind-the-back pass hit him in the face and bloodied his nose. "I won't use his name be- cause it's an embarrassing story for him," Field said. The unassuming Curry was full of surprises for anyone who at first glance thought he would be the average middle schooler. When Curry was en- rolled in the school mid- year, Lackey ran down to the secretary's office ex- cited — only to find that the NBA player's son stood about 5-foot-5. Field saw Curry sitting alone up against the school- yard wall during recess as the others played pickup in the potholed parking lot. Wanting to be welcom- ing, he asked if the new kid played the game too. "He looks up and says, 'Yeah, a little bit,'" Field re- called. "And now in hind- sight, it's a funny introduc- tion." Said Curry: "I warmed up. Walking in to a differ- ent school in the middle of the school year was defi- nitely very daunting, but the kids up there were awe- some." Curry felt at home on the court. Too young to be allowed to play on the high school team, he was left to dominate on a team comprised of seventh- and eighth-graders. Seth Curry, a sixth-grader who played on Curry's team when tour- naments allowed for it, gave the Saints a second future NBA player. "We had the Splash Brothers before anybody else did," Mack said. "The real Splash Brothers." The team had never won much of anything before the Currys came to town. Curry FROM PAGE 1 disabled list because of a flexor tendon strain, spent another long stretch on the DL with nerve irritation in his pitching elbow and fin- ished the season 2-4 with a career-high 5.79 ERA. A 16-game winner in 2012 when he anchored San Francisco's rotation and led the Giants to the sec- ond of three World Series titles in a five-year span, Cain says the health issues that bogged him down are no longer a concern. He's been doing some throwing in Arizona and expects to be full-go when the Giants begin spring training next week. "I like where he's at," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's in a good place right now. I don't know where he's go- ing to pitch as far as in the rotation but I know talk- ing to (head trainer Dave Groeschner) who's been watching him throw that he's throwing the ball very well now." HavingCainhealthyfora full season would be a boon forapitching staffthatisal- ready shaping up to be one of the best in the majors. San Francisco added free agents Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija in the offseason to pair with ace Madison Bumgarner — an 18-game winner each of the past two years — and Jake Peavy. A three-time All-Star who pitched the first per- fect game in franchise his- tory on June 13, 2012, Cain is most likely to wind up at the back end of the ro- tation as the fourth or fifth starter. That might not be a bad thing if the 31-year-old pitcher can regain his form a few years ago. "The two guys that we've added are perfect for the situation, are perfect for our clubhouse," Cain said. As for that 340-yard drive? "It was close," Cain said. "We didn't really mark it off." Cain FROM PAGE 1 the Brewers last year, the right-hander's third big- league season. And what does that mean for Coco Crisp, lim- ited to 44 games last year by injuries, and Mark Canha, who split time be- tween left field and first base last season? "Coco is healthy now," Forst said. "He can play center and DH. If he's healthy now, there are lots of ways he can help us." It seems that Crisp, side- lined last year first by el- bow surgery and then by a return of neck problems, is unlikely to be an everyday player again at 36. He was limited to pinch-hitting the final month of 2015, and at $11 million, he could be among the most highly paid pinch-hitters in the game if he can't get regular work in center field or DH. Billy Burns took over in center last year and was a hit as the leadoff man, and Billy Butler is expected to be the regular DH, so at- bats for Crisp could be scarce all the way around. The addition of Davis alsomeans Canha, whohad 16 homers and 70 RBIs to go with a .254/.315/.426 rookie season slash line, will be going up against Crisp in the competition for the left field and DH at-bats. Canha can also play first base, but newly acquired Yonder Alonso, a defensive whiz with a penchant for getting on base, is expected to gob- ble up most of the first base playing time. To make the deal, the A's shipped right-handed pitcher Bubby Derby and catcher Jacob Nottingham to Milwaukee.
