FEBRUARY 10-16, 2016 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM During the early weeks of January, nearly 850 high school students flooded onto the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College. The students arrived from all over the county — public, private and home-school students alike. The students were here to participate in the little-known High School Connections program, which offers free college classes to qualified high school students. Students can still enroll in certain college courses for the 2015-2016 school year, but most of the attention at this point is already focused on 2016-2017. Currently, the High School Connections office is hoping to spread the word about the program to local sophomores and juniors and their families. Students who will finish up their 10th or 11th grade years in the spring of 2016 are eligible for enrollment in classes for the fall of 2016. There are two different tracks for enrollment: College Transfer Pathways (CTP): The CTP offers students a variety of general education courses to choose from, like ENG, MAT, HIS, PSY, SOC, etc. We also offer opportunities for students to take various foreign language courses. All courses offered through these pathways are 100 percent guaranteed to transfer to the UNC institutions, provided that the student earns a "C" or better in the class at FTCC. Taking college-transfer courses is a great way for students to get a head start on their four-year university goals and save some money in the process. These classes generally go on the high school transcript as Honors-weighted, elective credit. Career and Technical Education (CTE): FTCC's CTE programs also offer numerous options for students to gain early access to career training. We offer approximately 30 different programs; most can be completed within one academic year and result in a college certificate. Students who complete the certificate with the required GPA are invited to walk in FTCC's graduation ceremony each May. Some of the exciting new programs that will be offered for 2016-2017 include Health & Fitness Science, Global Logistics, Network Defense, Digital Media, Mobile App Development, and Mobile & Web Basics. Existing favorites, like Nurse Aide, Emergency Medical Science, Demi-Chef, Infant/Toddler Care, Accounting Foundations, and Criminal Justice, will also be available. If this sounds like an exciting opportunity for you or for a high school student you know, we hope you'll join us at our annual Open House. The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tony Rand Student Center on FTCC's Fayetteville campus. We'll present a general information session at 5:30 and again at 6:30, and students and parents will have the opportunity to talk with our faculty about all the programs/courses offered for next year. Students can even begin their enrollment paperwork that night and follow up with their high school afterward for the next steps. A complete listing of HSC programs can be found on our website: http://www.faytechcc.edu/academics/high-school-connections/ For more information, email schmidm@faytechcc.edu or call 678-8542.
