By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer Hundreds of cattle were auctioned off Thurs- day during the 22nd annual Red Bluff Replacement Female Sale and Western Video Mar- ket Feeder Sale. Floor seats were full as were the stands at the fair- grounds. But how many people were participating in the auction was diffi- cult to tell. Most were observers enjoying the camaraderie of other cat- tlemen and cattlewomen. Mark and Ann Malott were in the stands for most of the auction. Though they followed along with each lot that was sold, they were just there to watch, they said. "This is just a great gathering of cattle peo- ple, and it only happens once a year," Mark Mal- ott said. The auction was broadcast live on Internet streaming, allowing hun- dreds of other to partici- pate. A number of video representatives handled phone calls from Internet bidders. The buyers are really getting a good deal. Just think about the price they will fetch later on, auc- tioneer Rick Machabo said. Most buyers who are looking for a herd of replacement females are looking for good genes. Bringing in a whole new herd or just adding a few more could mean better breeding. In the process known as culling, older and less desirable cows are replaced with young females. Cows are replaced for a number reasons, such as age, fail- ure to conceive or becom- ing crippled or lame. The auction is a good way for cattlemen who want to keep their herds at consistent levels to get some new life in their herd, Bull Sale Manager Adam Owens said. None of the cattle were present at the fairgrounds. They will be delivered directly from one ranch to the other. Buyers and sellers will work out the details. The only bull at the auction was the benefit bull, which was sold for $4,000 to John and Can- dace Owens. John Owens is one of the founders and serves as the vice presi- dent of the bull sale com- mittee. The calving-ease bull came from Kenny and Dianne Read's Bar KD Ranch in Culver, Ore. The proceeds will be donated to Water for Life, Inc., a group that advo- cates agricultural water rights. ——— Tang Lor can be reached at 527-2153, Ext. 110 or by e-mail at tlor@redbluffdailynews.co m.
