By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer A field of 153 horses and five mules will be up for auction this evening at the Red Bluff Bull & Geld- ing Sale, and Thursday people had a chance to watch them at work as the animals competed for the Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse. The competition began Thursday morning with the sifting of horses for confir- mation, and continued with reigning, a trail obstacle course, and the option for displaying how the horses work with cattle. While most during the afternoon chose to exhibit their horses' skills in work- ing with cattle, some chose to ride the horse around to show off its gate. One young man chose to show off his horse's tem- perament. He was riding a horse named Harlan Quinn Romance, bred by Mary Pearson, of Oakland, and consigned by Jim and Tina- Marie Schaafsma of Zenia. Harlan Quinn is a five- year-old chestnut Ameri- can Quarter Horse described in the catalog as a gentle horse anyone can ride. His rider Thursday proved the animal's tem- perament by first standing on the animal's back and throwing his lasso around. The young man then jumped off the horse, still tossing his lasso round and round, leapfrogged onto him from behind the horse and crawled under him — all while the horse stood patiently still. Mike and Leigh Grider of Orland brought their horse, Diamond Lena Hickory, a five-year-old gelding. Even though their horse had already compet- ed, they came to watch the others. Both buyers and sellers during the last 15 years, the couple said the show draws very good horses and train- ers. "This is a major event for the area," Mike Grider said. "We try to come every year." Grider said he likes that the horses are checked thoroughly from top to bot- tom for conformation and soundness. Buyers looks for things like how the horse handles being ridden, how it steers and how it works with cows, he said. "I look for trainability," Grider said. "It might be nice to look at but you also want something that has a good mind and doesn't have too many bad habits, like tossing its head, kick- ing and biting." Grider also looks at the smoothness of the horses gait while trotting and lop- ing. "If it's too rough to ride, it doesn't matter how pretty they are, you won't ride them much," Grider said. Jim Karr has been com- ing to the sales for 26 years since he moved to Shingle- town. A native of Bulgaria, he has been around horses most of his life, with his father having been a horse- man in Europe, he said. "Red Bluff should be proud of the horse sale," Karr said. "It's one of the premier horse sales in the world." Karr said he comes to the sale to watch and get informed on the prices of horses. "There are some good riders and trainers here," Karr said. "You can learn quite a bit by watching and listening." Karr looks for charac- teristics that tell him a horse is green, like how it responds to the rider and bit and the way it balances. How a rider is dressed and presents the horse also are important, he said. One Cottonwood resi- dent said he came to watch this year having hopes of bringing horses to the sale next year. "It's a sellers' market here," the man said. "It's a place for the rich to buy from poor ones, like me. Most people come (to the competition) to watch." While all horses entered the competition, only one will walk away with the title of Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse after the sifting process, which takes place throughout the competi- tion and ends tonight. Gates for the sale open at 3:30 p.m. The sale itself starts at 7 p.m. The competition contin- ues at 8 a.m. today, starting with team roping. Other events include cutting, hackamore, snaffle bit and stock horse.
