And while Super Bowl MVP linebacker Von Miller will become a free agent, that situation is more easily solvable for the Broncos. If they can't reach a long-term deal with Miller, who likely will seek to become the highest-paid defensive player in the league, they can franchise tag him. And they will. But replacing Peyton? That one is much tougher. Consider first Oswei- ler's situation. Until this season, when Manning had to be benched and then was sidelined for nearly two months by a foot injury, Osweiler pretty much was an unknown. He'd im- pressed Elway, Kubiak and even the previous coaching staff under John Fox with his work habits, mastery of the schemes, and with some perfor- mances in the preseason. Then Osweiler stepped in and Denver went 5-2 in his starts. Of course, Manning had to rescue the Broncos in the sea- son finale, reclaiming the starting position for the postseason — although it was truly the defense that was carrying the team toward the Lombardi Trophy it emphatically snatched up Sunday. With Manning out of the picture, Denver's di- lemma is how much Os- weiler is worth to the champions. He certainly will get attention from quarterback-starved teams such as Houston, Philadelphia, Cleveland and the Rams. He's more valuable to the Broncos because he knows their system, has been through a Super Bowl run with them, and, no small thing, was un- der Manning's wing for four years. But is Osweiler worth the megabucks and long-term deal he could get from someone else? In other words, is he worth superstar QB money? Kubiak repeatedly said the Broncos wouldn't be on top without Oswei- ler's contributions, and he is correct. During Su- per Bowl week, he basi- cally broke down Oswei- ler's value to Denver. "Obviously a big, tal- ented young man, can move around very well," Kubiak said. "Really a one-year player in col- lege, but growing as a pro. The biggest thing I'd say for Brock is that nowa- days in the National Foot- ball League when guys are drafted high, they don't get the luxury Brock has had. Brock has had a chance to grow up under a Hall of Famer and be coached extremely well, and has a chance to come up, I don't want to say the right way but the way a lot of guys were able to come up through the years many years ago. "I think he's benefited from that, being around Peyton on a daily basis, as a worker, in the meetings, as a pro, so I think he's benefited from that." Should Osweiler de- part — Denver is highly unlikely to use the fran- chise tag on him (it was $18.5 million this season) — the only quarterback on the roster with Man- ning's retirement would be Trevor Siemian, a total unknown. Elway won't be leav- ing his team in limbo at the position he played, of course. There are veterans he could bring in, some as stop gaps (Sam Bradford, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Nick Foles, Chase Daniel, Brian Hoyer could be in that mix), others with poten- tial to build around (Rob- ert Griffin III, Colin Kae- pernick, Mike Glennon). Or Elway could suit up himself — just kidding. Given his track record in charge of the Broncos, folks in Denver need not worry. Elway will get it right. Manning FROM PAGE 1 dogs with 28 points, 6 re- bounds, 2 assists and 3 steals and Henna Acevedo had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Mi- chell Woolbert had 7 re- bounds and an assist, Genesis Acevedo had 4 re- bounds and Vanesa Cota had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Heather Rodri- guez had 3 steals. The Bulldogs (11-8 over- all, 2-3 league) are sched- uled to host the winless Liberty Christian Patriots (0-10 overall, 0-5 league) at 6 tonight. CARDINALS 62, WEST VAL- LEY 71 The Corning Lady Cardinals had strong open- ing and closing periods Fri- day night at home against the West Valley Eagles to send the game into over- time, but came up short 71- 62, managing just 4 points in the extra frame. As of 4:30 p.m. Monday no individual stats had been posted for the game. The Cardinals (11-10 overall, 3-3 league) drop into a tie for third with the Eagles in the Northern Girls League standings as they prepare to face the Yreka Miners (7-15 overall, 1-5 league) at 7:30 tonight in Yreka. Girls FROM PAGE 1 United Center on Dec. 20, Donskoi had his first NHL two-point game, which in- cluded a nifty breakaway goal on Chicago goalie Corey Crawford in what ended up as a 4-3 overtime loss for the Sharks. But Donskoi, 23, doesn't want to be defined by point production alone. Through the first four months, he's shown to be a two-way player more than capable of keeping up with the NHL pace. His skating allows him to be both an ef- fective forechecker and re- sponsible in the defensive zone, nottheeasiestoftasks foranyplayerinhisfirstfull season in North America. "He seems to be playing as confident a game as he's played all year," Sharks for- ward and linemate Tommy Wingels said. "You can see it in the plays he's making and the success he's hav- ing, and it's fun to watch." Donskoi was drafted in the fourth round by Florida in 2010, but he and the Pan- thers weren't able to agree on a contract. Donskoi has previously said he wasn't ready at the time to sign an entry level deal with an NHL team, so he stayed in his native Finland and grew his game to the point where he was finally ready to come abroad. In his final season in the Finnish League, Donskoi had 49 points in 58 regu- lar season games, and 22 points in 19 playoff games as Karpat won the league championship. Donskoi had eight points in eight games at the World Championship for Finland, and less than a week after that tourna- ment ended, signed a two- year, $2,275,000 deal with the Sharks. "I knew he could play the same way here as he did in Finland," said Nash- ville forward Miikka Salo- maki, Donskoi's former teammate at Karpat. "It's not a surprise. He's a good player." "He can do it here, too," Sharks forward Melker Karlsson said of Donskoi's transition to the North American style. "He picks up the puck well, can go through a couple people. I think that's what he did in Finland, and that's what made him successful here." Donskoi impressed the Sharks' brass enough in camp to not only make the big club to start the sea- son but play on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski, where he stayed for roughly the first month of the season.
