Asyou know,I travel quite a bit, which means I have the need to rent cars. Most of the time that goes well, and by "well" I mean I land a fantastic daily rate and I get to test drive a nice new car. Other times? Not so well, and now I'm talk- ing about the stench of stale, cigarette smoke made even worse by try- ing to cover it up with an equally stinky floral spray. I was reminded of my last bout with car odor when I heard from EC reader Neil, who inquires, "Will Nok-Out work to re- move smoke odor from a vehicle?" The answer is a re- sounding, "Yes!" and one I wish I could also offer to every car rental agency. In fact, I know of no other way to truly eliminate that odor — not cover it up with another odor — than Nok-Out. Let's do a quick review for what makes Nok-Out so amazing: It's hypoal- lergenic, non-toxic, non- staining and non-mask- ing, which means it leaves behind only a fresh, clean smell. I can't guarantee Neil can achieve that "new car" smell, but I promise that if he follows the fol- lowing procedures care- fully, that car will be free of the lingering smell of cigarettes. INTERIOR. To remove tobacco smoke and musty mildew odors from ve- hicles, spray upholstery and headliners with Nok- Out. Spray carefully in all seams in the upholstery, in the ashtrays, around the cup holders, floorboards and dashboard: in other words, the entire interior of your vehicle. It isn't necessary to saturate, but spray for good coverage, leaving no unsprayed spaces. You may scrub briskly on more soiled or polluted sites. BEST COVERAGE. To achieve full and complete coverage, consider using a small handheld sprayer, like the Fogmaster Jr., about $120. This sprayer will provide exactly the coverage you need to pene- trate into all parts of your vehicle and is what many automobile agencies use to remediate odors and stains. A home vaporizer will also create a good qual- ity fog. Use Nok-Out full strength or up to 50/50 with water. VENTILATION SYS- TEM. With the engine running, spray Nok-Out into the ventilation system (you will find this at the exterior base of the wind- shield). Turn the air circulation on high with all windows closed; run for a full five minutes. Open windows, continue running the air circulation system, and run for another five min- utes. For severe tobacco, musty mildew odors, odors of spilled milk or any chemical odor, a sec- ond application may be re- quired. Should foul odors return in a day or two, re- apply following these di- rections. LEATHER UPHOL- STERY. Nok-Out does not harm leather or syn- thetic leather materi- als. These tightly woven skins and other types of upholstery may require two, three or more appli- cations to penetrate into the cushions of your ve- hicle. But you need to do this. Nok-Out must come in contact with the source of the odor and that could be inside the seats and other uphol- stered areas. PRIOR ATTEMPTS. If you have tried other odor removers, they need to be neutralized first before proceeding with Nok-Out. Do this with a mild bak- ing soda solution of cup baking soda to one gallon of water. TRUNK. Trunks also hold odors from the in- terior, the exhaust, and from any malodorous contents they might have held. Spray liber- ally with Nok-Out on the total interior of the trunk space. Pay particular atten- tion to all seams and crevices. Remove any storage bins, and spray inside as well. If you have a stink prob- lem other than in a car, you can translate these same procedures to de- stink antique furniture and areas in or around a home. The most important thing to remember: Nok- Out must come in direct contact with the offend- ing odor — even if that odor has soaked its way through the carpet, into the pad and onto the sur- face below. If the odor could make its way through all those layers, so can Nok-Out! If you'd like to order Nok- Out over the phone, they can be reached at 1-866- 551-1927 — tell them Mary sent you. EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE Howtoridacarof stinky smell of smoke Mary Hunt By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF The audito- rium of the Tehama District Fairground filled quickly shortly after doors opened at 5 p.m. and a small line had begun forming minutes prior to the start of the Te- hama County Sheriff's De- partment Volunteer Pro- gram Crab Feed held Sat- urday. The event, which saw a special guest performance of Chad Bushnell with Mat- thew Songmaker playing beside him, was expected to draw about 200 people with most of the tickets sold prior to the day of the event, Sheriff Dave Hen- cratt said. This is the third year for the event, which raises funds through the dinner as well as silent auction and raffle held throughout the evening. It brought in nearly $10,000, Hencratt said. All funds raised go to the various volunteer or- ganizations at the depart- ment, including Sheriff's Team of Active Retired Seniors, which celebrated 20 years of service Friday, Search and Rescue, Re- serve Officers, Chaplains, Explorers and Neighbor- hood Watch. "Not one of them has a budget from us to use," Hencratt said. "The money raised for STARS will go to incidentals. The chap- lains program, which has three active chaplains, will use the money for sending chaplains to training for responding to critical inci- dents and various types of trauma." The money for the Ex- plorers will go to help with the costs associated with the youth. The unit has eight members, Hencratt said. "A lot of our guys who are deputy sheriffs started out as Explorers," Hencratt said. "It's an on-going, great program." Search and Rescue has seen funding from outside sources in the form of Title Three funding, but that has dwindled over the years. Most recently, the group was able to use the funds they've raised between the crab feed and staffing the park- ing lot at various com- munity events to lever- age grants received from community organiza- tions along with the tal- ents within the group to remodel the search and rescue training class- room at no cost to the county. Search and Rescue volunteers spent Fri- day and Saturday at the fairgrounds help- ing those who had got- ten their vehicles stuck and had rescued more than 100 vehicles in the two-day span, Hencratt said. The Sacramento River Discovery Center's topic for the February Thursday evening program will once again be dealing with wa- ter. The Feb. 11 program at 7 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building, at 275 Sale Lane, will be an opportunity to learn more about ground- water and its importance. With the drought, the lack of surface water for use by homeowners and agricul- ture opened some serious discussions. Erin Smith, geology en- gineer with the northern office of California Depart- ment of Water Resources will provide the basic over- view of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act program and impact it may have on all residents of this stretch of the Sac- ramento River. Her presentation will in- clude information that can be taken home and shared with others not able to at- tend. After the presentation there will be an opportu- nity for questions and an- swers and of course there will be refreshments. The Discovery Center has begun fall and winter hours and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or by appoint- ment. Call 527-1196 or write to bhughessrdc@gmail. com for more. The center is at 1000 Sale Lane within the Men- docino National Forest's Red Bluff Recreation Area. The two acre garden is open to the public sunrise to sunset. No pruning on the plant material with- out written permission is allowed. Plant informa- tion centers are expected to be installed through- out the garden to help vis- itors learn the names of blooming California na- tive plants. The center building is open to the public 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteers are sought to help get the Heirloom Vegetable Gar- den area ready for plant- ing next month.
