By GEOFF JOHNSON DN Staff Writer Wednesday looked to be a bittersweet day for Linda Franklin, Sanger. The 32nd Red Bluff Working Stock Dog Sale was not scheduled until Fri- day afternoon, but Franklin was already regretting her decision to auction Dash, her 2-year-old border collie, the first dog she plans to sell in five years of training. On grass green after a week's worth of rain, a mostly silent audience watched 17 dogs leap, run and chase cattle, all at the commands of their owners. Many will soon be taking directions from another. Except for a change in field and the panel of judges, the work is similar to what Dash has to do, not just out of necessity, but out of breed. Yet Dash makes for a good companion, too — the kind of dog you can take for a walk on the beach, Franklin said. A good stock dog can do the work of two or even three men, said Pamela Piek, of Clovis. Her dog, Mo — short for Mo' Betta Blue, a name chosen by her children — is 3 years old and has long been singled out for a life on another ranch. And after all that work, the dog will still run to you and lick your hand, said Clarence Holdbrooks, of Visalia. For Ambrose McAullife, a renowned Fort Kalamath trainer and breeder, dogs are not only man's best friend, they are undervalued for their intelligence. People can learn more from dogs than dogs can learn from people, he said. But McAullife views his partings as good things, and not because of the money. If a dog he sells makes its owner happy, McAullife can say, at the end of the day, that he has created another convert to his cause. "The joy of passing it on, that's what drives it," he said. The Working Stock Dog Sale is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday. The final round of grad- ing is scheduled for noon Friday in the south end of the Trinity Avenue parking lot at the Tehama District Fairground. 4A – Daily News – Thursday, January 28, 2010 Come in and check out our $ 4 99 Lunch Specials We are open and NOT CLOSING Mon thru Fri 11-3 200 So.
