"The Case for Kanye,"

When the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago awarded
Kanye West an honorary
doctorate in May 2015, many
self-appointed gatekeepers to
the art world set their phasers
on "snark," deriding West as
a narcissist and a poseur.
The former may be some-
what true, given his marriage
into the spotlight-hogging
Kardashian clan and tactless
remarks that seem crafted to
provoke. But a phony? This
short film, produced as part
of the "The Art Assignment"
weekly series from PBS Digi-
tal Studios, examines West's
body of work and deems it
worth taking seriously.

You know a Web sitcom
is capable of going anywhere
when it opens with the sui-
cide of a character who then
comes back as a toaster.
The main arc of this series
follows Gary (Chris Knutson),
a lonely substitute teacher,
and his hapless buddy Tom
(Zach Coulter) as they just
try to get through life without
being pushed around. Even-
tually, they decide to become
rappers in a bid to win the
respect of the world at large.
Do not expect that to end
well. The cast also includes
Adam Fielitz, Pat Susmilch,
Ian Rans and Tom Reed.
