ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Vendors were expecting a larger than normal crowd to stop in and visit the trade show, located between the Pau- line Davis and Don Smith pavilions, which opened at noon Wednesday and runs through Saturday at the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale. "It's a big weekend for the bull sale with the 75th an- niversary of the bull sale," said Carlos Duarte of Car- los' Silver out of Roseville. "We don't open until noon, but already we have had a lot of people browsing and I've already had two sales. This is a pretty good show for us." Duarte has been a vendor for about 27 years, he said, and it always surprises him how well the show does, es- pecially since it is so close to the beginning of the year and Christmas having just happened. Rodney Allison, whose sign reads "Master Hat- ter North Valley Hat Com- pany," traveled about eight hours to come to the show, which is one of two that he participates in all year. His other stop is the Canadian Finals in Edmonton, Al- berta. "This show has gotten better and better through the years," Allison said. "You get to see a lot of cus- tom work that you don't see other places." Allison received a call from his mentor in hat making who, after years of telling Allison he ought to check out the show, had rented him a booth. "I had no idea what a trade show was, but I got here, went out and got a few screws and boards, put a booth together and have been here ever since," Alli- son said. This is his 26th year at the trade show and he says he loves being able to get out and mingle with people. He has even been known to purchase a horse at the sale and enjoys getting to check out other craftsmen such as the silversmiths and tack makers. "Making hats is all I've done for 30 years," Allison said. "It's all about word of mouth. It's great because you get to see old friends who bring you new cli- ents and mingle with peo- ple you've worked for in the past. I also try to do a small sponsorship for the sale and support the youth raffle. I like to be more involved than just being a vendor." Allison has a special dis- play set up of various tools of his trade, including an- tique items from the 1900s and some from the late 1800s, with signs saying what they are. Across the alley, Judd Miller of Judd Miller Cus- tom Saddlery from Red Bluff had plenty of help set- ting up his booth with his mother Arlene Miller and daughter Justina Savercool pitching in. "He's one of the original vendors," Arlene Miller said. "If he wasn't at the first one, he was definitely there for the second. I come every year and help him move in and go back to the ranch." Savercool has been help- ing her father out at the booth on Wednesdays for the past four years, she said. Kit and Paul Reynolds, who own Reynold's Ranch and Farm Supply with The Loft upstairs on Madison Street in Red Bluff, have been at the sale for at least 20 years and remember well being in a shed out by the main arena when they first started, Kit Reynolds said. "We always try to be ready early because people always come browse ahead of time even though the show's not open until noon," Reynolds said. "From here, we'll pack up and head on to Klamath Falls to do it all over again next week." Field Family Bits and Spurs is brand new to the show and hoping to do well, said Gary Field, who was joined in the booth by his wife, Patti. "People have been tell- ing us at other shows that this is a really good show and we ought to give it a try," Field said. "We've been trying and we finally made it in." While no sales had been made yet, there were sev- eral people browsing, Field said. If nothing else, they couple hoped to get their cards out and get some business in the future from people who saw them at the show. The trade show opens at 9 a.m. today and Satur- day and will be open un- til 9 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Saturday.
