By Janie McCauley The Associated Press SANTA CLARA New San Fran- cisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly fi- nally found a defensive coordi- nator, hiring former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil on Wednesday. Naming his top defensive coach became the biggest task for Kelly, an offensive-minded coach hired Jan. 14 to replace fired first-year coach Jim Tomsula after the franchise went 5-11 and missed the playoffs for a second straight season. Curtis Modkins was named offensive coordinator and Derius Swinton II special teams coordi- nator. The 37-year-old O'Neil will be challenged to once again make the defense one of the NFL's best as had been the case in previous seasons. Kelly said last week he won't "micromanage" his coaches though he will call the offensive plays from the sideline. In his first season as Browns defensive coordinator in 2014, O'Neil led a top-10 unit in the NFL, but his defense struggled near the bottom in the defensive categories last season. The '14 unit ranked second in the league with 21 interceptions and fourth in total takeaways with 29. Those Browns owned the fifth-best pass defense and ranked ninth in to- tal defense. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Cardinals up 13-10 at the end of the first quarter be- fore being shut down in the sec- ond to head into halftime down 18-17. A big third quarter put the Cardinals back on top 31-25 and the defense just held on in the fi- nal frame for the win. Named player of the game, Hoag had seven rebounds and two assists. He was 2-for-4 from behind the 3-point line. Noah Zoppi was 3-for-6 for 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two as- sists; Corey Busta had six points, nine rebounds, three assists and a steal; Austin Mishoe had six points, two rebounds, three as- sists and a steal; Wyatt Haydon had five points, four rebounds and three assists and Calvin Ware had four points, a rebound and two as- sists. CHESTER 68, BULLDOGS 46 The Chester Volcanoes came out strong Tuesday night, jumping out to a first-quarter lead of 25-14 over Los Molinos and going into halftime up 43-22. A strong third quarter for the Bulldogs wouldn't be enough to make up the deficit and Chester closed out strong for the 68-46 win. Alex Russell led the Bulldogs with 20 points, going 2-for-7 from beyond the arc, four rebounds and a steal; Jarred Costa had 10 points, five rebounds and an as- sist; Aaron Hardy had 10 points, nine rebounds and an assist; Tan- ner Prest had four points and six rebounds and Josue Orozco had two points, seven rebounds, an as- sist and a steal. BOYS BASKETBALL Hoag li s Ca rd in al s' win over Falcons Bulldogs take road loss to Chester Volcanoes By Josh Dubow The Associated Press SAN JOSE After an up-and- down start to the season, the San Jose Sharks head into the All-Star break on quite the roll. Led by a rejuvenated Joe Thornton, All-Stars Joe Pavel- ski and Brent Burns and new- comer goalie Martin Jones, the Sharks have earned at least a point in 10 straight games heading into the break for their longest point streak in five years — when they made their last trip to the conference finals. "When you're playing this good you don't want a break," Thornton said. "You just want to play every other day like we've been doing because you feel so good. We've been play- ing a lot of minutes. If the guys use the rest the right way we'll be fine coming out of the break." The Sharks will enjoy six days off before starting a four- game road trip in Anaheim next Tuesday. They will come back in second place in the Pacific Division, thanks to an 8-0-2 stretch that vaulted them up from sixth place and is the best run for the team since go- ing 9-0-1 from Jan. 15, 2011, to Feb. 9, 2011. After missing the playoffs last year for the first time since 2003, the Sharks are once again a contender in the West- ern Conference. By Dennis Passa The Associated Press MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA In keeping with the way this Aus- tralian Open has been going, Andy Murray was asked follow- ing a quarterfinal win Wednes- day about the state of his game. And then, invariably, about the integrity of his sport. Murray and a much lesser- known British player, Johanna Konta, advanced to the semifi- nals Wednesday. Murray beat David Ferrer 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam for the 18th time. The 24-year-old Konta had a 6-4, 6-1 win over Chinese quali- fier Zhang Shuai. It's the first time since the Australian Open in Decem- ber 1977 that two British play- ers (John Lloyd and Sue Barker) have advanced to the final four of any major. Konta is playing in her first Australian Open main draw, af- ter losing in qualifying rounds three years in a row. She had a first-round win over No. 8 Venus Williams and beat No. 21 Ekat- erina Makarova in straight sets in the fourth round. She has won fans at Mel- bourne Park with her athleti- cism and mental composure on the court and good humor and a polite humility in interviews after winning. Born in Austra- lia but living in Britain since her early teens, Konta also has Hun- garian citizenship and calls her- self a "tri-citizen." Asked about her parents' re- action back home in Britain, AUSTRALIAN OPEN Murray, Konta both advance into semifinals 49ERS PAGE 2 SHARKS PAGE 2 TENNIS PAGE 2 SPORTS » redbluffdailynews.com Thursday, January 28, 2016 MORE AT FACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
