By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer The Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale kicks into full gear today, but the fairgrounds were already abuzz Mon- day afternoon and Tuesday as cattle ranchers, dog handlers and bull sale officials geared up for the event. Cattlemen and women sat around propane heaters trying to stay warm as they swapped stories and caught up with friends. Sue Willhoite of Hillsboro, Ore. usually attends about five bull sales a year, but she especially likes the one in Red Bluff because it is really more like a social sale, she said. "This is one of the best bull sales because it's really fun" she said. "You get to meet new people and see people that you only see once a year." Others were busy getting their bulls ready for their big show date. Bulls were washed, blow dried and combed down while trying to stay calm in blocking chutes. John England, of Oregon, brought 25 bulls to sell. As he trimmed the coat of one bull he explained that get- ting the bull to look square and fuller at the top would make it look more appealing to the buyer. This bull only gets one "haircut," so it has to make him look good, Eng- land said. As of Monday afternoon over 300 bulls, 150 horses, 5 mules and 20 dogs had been checked in. Though the number of animals usually stay the same each year, the quality of the animals gets better all the time, said Ron Anderson, a direc- tor. This could be the best year as far as the quality of the bulls and horses. Elsewhere at the fairgrounds, tradesmen of all sorts were busy set- ting up their wares for the Trade Show. Carlos Duarte of Roseville, who has been selling his silver goods at the bull sale for more than 25 years, expects to have another good year. He comes because there are lots of inter- esting people and he makes good money, he joked. Bull Sale Manager Adam Owens said the Trade Show is a welcomed addition to the sale because it draws people who aren't interested in buying livestock to the fairgrounds. It's a little something extra for people who aren't here for the cattle. ——— Tang Lor can be reached at 527- 2153, Ext. 110 or by e-mail at tlor@red- bluffdailynews.com.
