ByJohnPye The Associated Press MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA In the darker moments, when the med- ical needs of his family were be- comingmoreurgent,AndyMurray thought about leaving the Austra- lian Open before the fourth round. The stress was obvious Mon- day, when an agitated Murray yelled and berated himself repeat- edly and had trouble dealing with Bernard Tomic's unusual style be- foreadvancingtothequarterfinals with a scrappy 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win. "The last few days were very, very tough. A lot of emotions, things sort of changing all of the time in my head," Murray said. "It's been a stressful few days, but I'll try to rest up the next few days to get ready for the next one." Murray's wife, Kim, is due to have their first baby next month and he promised he'd fly back to Britain at any time if she went into labor — even if it meant missing a chance at a drought- breaking fifth Australian final. The two-time major winner was playing in the third round on Saturday when his father-in- law, Nick Sears, who was in Mel- bourne as Ana Ivanovic's coach, needed sudden medical in a nearby stadium. Sears had to be taken from Rod Laver Arena, where he was watching Ivanovic play, to a nearby hospital by am- bulance and was admitted over- night. "I just can't believe something like that happened a few days ago. It's shocking," Murray said. "Nick is an unbelievably fit guy. Very, very scary." BOYS BASKETBALL CorningboyssneakpastGrizzlies Bulldogs, Warriors hit with losses By Howard Fendrich The Associated Press Peyton Manning is the only five-time MVP in NFL history, one of the faces of the league and, at 39, the oldest starting quarter- back to lead a team to the Super Bowl. Slowed by age and injury, he is no longer the record-breaking passer he once was. Most folks fig- ure Manning's fourth Super Sun- day appearance will be his last game as a pro. Cam Newton is at the opposite end of his career, just 26, mak- ing his debut in the big game. He also is expected to earn MVP honors for the first time, part of a new breed of dual-threat QBs as good at running as they are at throwing. For the next two weeks, until Manning's AFC champion Den- ver Broncos (14-4) play Newton's NFC champion Carolina Pan- thers (17-1) for the Lombardi Tro- phy in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 7, most of the focus will be on the two quarterbacks who were No. 1 overall draft picks 13 years apart. "Oh, wow," said Newton, whose Panthers opened as 4-point favor- ites with most bookmakers. "Play- ing 'The Sheriff.'" That is a reference to Manning, who is 1-2 in past Super Bowls. He won a championship with the In- dianapolis Colts in 2007, lost with the Colts in 2010, and lost again with the Broncos in 2014. But this is a different version of Manning. Yes, he's still as good as any- one at diagnosing defenses and changing things up — or appear- ing to, anyway — at the line of scrimmage. Yes, he's still out there yelling "Omaha!" "He most certainly is a Hall of Famer," Panthers coach Ron Ri- vera said.
