ByMichaelR.Sisakand Verena Dobnik The Associated Press NEW YORK East Coast residents clobbered by the weekend blizzard trudged into the workweek Mon- day amid slippery roads, spotty transit service and mounds of snow that bur- ied cars and blocked side- walks after some cities got an entire winter's snow in two days. In Brooklyn, only one teacher at the Bedford- Stuyvesant New Begin- nings Charter School called out, despite more than two feet of snow across New York City. "A lot of teachers are taking the train instead of driving," said Wanda Mo- rales, director of opera- tions at the school, stand- ing outside while mainte- nance workers spread salt and parents dropped off their children. In Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, there were signs of nor- malcy; shops were open, and main roadways were mostly cleared, dotted with large piles of snow. Mat- thew Mason, 29, was riding the train into Washington to go to his job at a hotel. The part-time law student said he figured he should be there, though things would likely be a little slower. "I've sat in my house too much already," he said. Dave Lenowitz was perched on a snowbank in Philadelphia near what's normally the stop for the bus that takes him to his job as the director of a non- profit. "Normally I bicycle, but it's a little too slippery," he said. "There's not enough snow, otherwise I'd ski. It's only seven miles." For others, the week- end extended into Monday because of closed schools and government offices. The storm dropped snow from the Gulf Coast to New England, with near- record snowfalls tallied from Washington, D.C. to New York City. At least 31 people died as a result of the storm; the deaths oc- curred in car accidents, from carbon monoxide poi- soning, and from heart at- tacks while shoveling snow. Flying remained partic- ularly messy after airlines canceled nearly 12,000 weekend flights and hun- dreds more Monday. Air- ports resumed limited ser- vice in New York City, Balti- more, and Philadelphia. In the Washington area, Rea- gan National Airport saw its first flights Monday, and Dulles International Air- port expected to resume flights late in the day. But delays reverberated around the country. U.S.Sen.DickDurbinwas on a rescheduled pre-dawn flight from Springfield, Il- linois, to Chicago while on the way to Washington on Monday morning. The Illi- noisDemocratsaidhe'sbeen through this before. "Most of us who spend part of our lives in Wash- ington know to expect the worst when it comes to snow," he said. "I knew the forecast was enough to cause a problem." Tom Aloi, who works in construction management, was at Chicago O'Hare try- ing to get back to New York City after a business trip to Germany. His rescheduled fight to Newark Liberty was already delayed sev- eral hours. "Yes, we are frustrated. We are aggravated," Aloi said. "It's a ripple effect. It affects the whole world." BLIZZARD Sl ip pe ry s ta rt t o wo rk w ee k for East Coast commuters PETERMORGAN—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS People clear snow from parked cars on Henry Street in the Chinatown neighborhood in New York on Sunday. By Paul J. Weber The Associated Press AUSTIN, TEXAS A Hous- ton grand jury investigat- ing undercover footage of Planned Parenthood found no wrongdoing Monday by the abortion provider and instead indicted anti- abortion activists involved in making the videos that provoked outrage among Republican leaders nation- wide. David Daleiden, founder of the Center for Medical Progress, was indicted on a felony charge of tamper- ing with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to purchas- ing human organs. An- other activist, Sandra Merritt, was also indicted on a charge of tamper- ing with a governmental record. It's the first time anyone in the group has been charged criminally since the videos started surfacing last year. In a statement announc- ing the indictment, Har- ris County District Attor- ney Devon Anderson didn't provide details on the charges, including what record or records were al- legedly tampered with and why Daleiden faces a charge related to buying human or- gans. Anderson's office said it could not provide details until the documents charg- ing Daleiden and Merritt were formally made public, which was expected later Monday. "We were called upon to investigate allegations of criminal conduct by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast," Anderson's state- ment said. "As I stated at the outset of this investiga- tion, we must go where the evidence leads us." The anti-abortion Cen- ter for Medical Prog- ress has released several covertly shot videos of Planned Parenthood offi- cials discussing the han- dling of fetal tissue from abortions. The center claims that Planned Par- enthood illegally sold fe- tal tissue; Planned Parent- hood officials have denied any wrongdoing and have said the videos were mis- leadingly edited. Republican Gov. Greg Ab- bott has called footage from the Planned Parenthood clinic in Houston "repulsive and unconscionable."
