The department has been un- able to obtain new employees, specifically five officers, this fis- cal year allowing for the funding for salaries and benefits to go to- ward other department needs. The department is hoping to fill these opened positions in the next fiscal year, Police Chief Kyle Sanders said. In the budget adjustment, $150,000 from the savings will be moved to the machinery and RED BLUFF Cityapproves police budget adjustment for upgrades Staff report @redbluffnews on Twitter RED BLUFF A 29-year-old Gerber transient was arrested Wednes- day afternoon after he allegedly tried to pass himself off as some- one else by using another's iden- tification card at Check into Cash on South Main Street. Red Bluff Police logs show a call was received from the business at 3:50 p.m. reporting Don Tod Na- tho was trying to use an ID that was not his own to cash a check for $529. An officer responded and con- tacted Natho and learned he was in possession of another man's California identification card and was trying to claim the other man's name. During a search the officer lo- cated three books of checks be- longing to a Red Bluff resident. The owner had been the victim of a burglary that was being in- vestigated by the Tehama County Sheriff's Department, according to a Red Bluff Police press release. A fire broke out about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday and Chad Glenn woke up and was able to rescue his two daughters, students at Manton School, but his wife perished in the fire, Manton Elementary School Secretary Linda Strawn said. The youngest daughter, a kin- dergartner, was taken to Mercy Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation and some burns and Strawn said she had updates from friends that the girl was re- leased Wednesday. The older daughter, a second- grader, ran back into the house to try to save a pet and received some serious burns. She was flown to a larger hospital out of the area for treatment and friends have reported she has been moved out of intensive care, Strawn said. The family has relatives in Redding so they will have a place to stay once everyone's out of the hospital, but the school, and more specifically the Manton School Community Club, want to do what they can to help them get back on their feet. "They have a lot of support from their neighbors at the fish hatchery and we're very support- ive here as a community in trying to do what we can," Strawn said. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." The benefit dinner for the Glenn family will be 4-6:30 p.m. Saturday with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the family. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger. Those who cannot make it can help by bringing a donation by the school between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. weekdays or mailing the donation to P.O. Box 410, Manton, 96059. Checks should be made payable to the Manton School Community Club. Donations of clothing and gift cards are welcome, Strawn said. The older girl wears size 8-10 in clothing and size 3 in children's shoes. The younger girl wears size 5-6 and a toddlers' shoe size 13. For more information on the event, call Manton School at 474- 3167 before 3 p.m. After 3 p.m., call (805) 550-3161. "After the Battle of the Bulge, we were the 'Battaling Bastards of Bastogne,'" Shepherd said of the December 1944 event. "It was quite a battle. We were sent in to hold the roads the Germans were going to use for counter offensive. "We were told to hold it at all cost. The Ger- mans completely surrounded us and with the bad weather there was no way for air support until it broke. We fought the Germans day and night. We did what we had to do. I imagine the Ger- mans were told to take it at all cost."
