Hangtags have been placed on household trash cart handles for citizens to view easily and take inside for reference. Leaf season allows for unbagged leaves and pine straw to be picked up curbside. If citizens put their leaves out in sturdy bags or containers on regular yard debris day, they will be picked up weekly. This also helps keep leaves out of the storm drains. Construction to Begin on Veterans Park &RQVWUXFWLRQLVDERXWWREHJLQRQ3KDVH,RIWKH GRZQWRZQ6WDWH9HWHUDQV3DUN The Fayetteville City Council approved a construction contractor bid Jan. 11. ValleyCrest Landscape Development of Durham came in with the low bid. A groundbreaking is set for the park Thursday, )HEDWDPRQWKH3DUDGH)LHOGRIWKH Airborne and Special Operations Museum. The state is paying for the construction of the park. The park is scheduled to open July 4, 2011. It's In Our Hands The City of Fayetteville and the Cumberland County Complete Count Committee want citizens to do their part in helping Fayetteville get more funding and FRQJUHVVLRQDOUHSUHVHQWDWLRQE\¿OOLQJRXWWKHLU Census questionnaires in April. The Cumberland County Complete Count Committee and City of Fayetteville held an awareness event Jan. 6 at the downtown Headquarters Library to encourage citizens to ¿OORXWWKHLUTXHVWLRQQDLUHV Census population counts are taken every 10 years to determine distribution of federal spending and congressional representation for states. More than $478 billion in federal money will be dispersed to states for Medicaid, highways, housing, schools and other programs. Democracy North Carolina is holding a seminar Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help organizations who want to do Census outreach programs. The event will be held at the North Regional Library, located at 855 McArthur Road, and will focus on how volunteers can improve the Census response rate. Citizens will learn how to create and implement a Census continued next page Recycling Carts Added to Buildings, Fields In the City of Fayetteville's ongoing efforts to encourage citizens to recycle, the City's Environmental Services Department has placed recycling carts at City owned buildings DQGDWKOHWLF¿HOGV A major effort is collecting plastic sports drink and water bottles at the athletic facilities that were not being collected before. A $22,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) and a City match of $4,400 was used to purchase 530 96-gallon recycling carts. A City employee vacuums up loose leaves left out in the Hillendale neighborhood. The service is a part of the second round of loose leaf-pickup season in Fayetteville.
