Bill@upandcomingweekly.com. PUBLISHER'S PEN First, I want to say congratulations to Margaret Dickson who was recently named to replace Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand of the 19th District who recently resigned to head the North Carolina Post Release Supervision and Parole Board. Excellent choice! I am confident that her "petite feet" will fill the big shoes of Sen. Rand. Also, we congratulate retired educator Breeden Blackwell who is leaving his post as Cumberland County commissioner after 12 years to serve in the newly created position of director of governmental relations for our community hospital. He will do very well in that position. Sen. Larry Shaw has also decided not to run for re-election. These three recent developments are setting off a chain reaction of political maneuvering and posturing seldom seen in our community. Fasten your seatbelts folks. It is going to be a wild ride. City Councilwoman Val Applewhite is going after Dickson's seat in the House of Representatives, as is former State Representative and Fayetteville Mayor Bill Hurley. Both good candidates. City Councilman Wesley Meredith has announced that he will challenge Dickson for the District 19th seat in the upcoming November elections. It was also rumored that local attorney Dave Bolick may also challenge Dickson in November. Blackwell's resignation and Shaw's decision not to run will have potential political want- a-bees coming out of the woodwork as well. Who knows where that will end? However, what we do know is the "scent of change" is in the air. Can you smell it? If not, I suggest you sniff harder! The American people and that includes Fayetteville and Cumberland County residents, are getting weary and fed up with the back door, good- ole-boy, pay-to-play, business as usual mentality and conduct of local, state and national politicians and public officials. Local residents are very much aware of the lack of transparency in our government, the back room deals and arrogant attitudes that result in illogical decisions or unexplained indecision, conflicting policies and the costly mistakes for which no one ever seems to take responsibility. Well, take heed political zealots for you are on notice. The great state of Massachusetts has sent you all a very strong and potent political message. Get real and start listening to your constituents. Start representing "all" the people. Yes, the political winds are swirling here in our community as city, county and state candidates all scramble and jockey for position. The message from Massachusetts is loud and clear. Give the American people honesty and dignity at all levels of government. Provide answers and actions to the electorate who empowered you or face the consequences. In our community (and state), all you need to do is listen to the news or read the newspaper to experience first hand the political frustration in America. The point being, corruption and political arrogance come in many forms and fashions but the results are always the same. So, this movement and attitude that is starting to capture the hearts and minds of Americans is not about the Independent Scott Brown beating the Democratic stronghold of Martha Coakley in Massachusetts. It's about the Constitutional rights and wishes of the people being so blatantly and arrogantly trampled or totally ignored. They don't want Obamacare, back room deals, secrecy and pay-to-play politics. They want openness, honesty and transparency. They want leaders they can trust and the American people are telling us that loud and clear. But are we listening? Well, we better be. Because the message from Massachusetts is addressed to everyone and it's coming to Fayetteville and Cumberland County via special delivery and there will be no return to sender!
