His coach never lost faith in the second-year pro who'd been cut by the previous coaching staff last year and won his job back over the summer. "I think Brandon's con- fidence is up right now," Gary Kubiak said. "I think he's had a really good year. He's worked through a lit- tle rough patch and he's come back. Now he's as good as he's been all sea- son long." Gostkowski has missed on just three of 39 tries, counting the playoffs, and McManus is 35 of 40. Of course, both would rather be kicking PATs Sunday than field goals. "Any time No. 18 gets the ball, I'm thinking we're go- ing to score a touchdown," McManus said. "I try to prepare my mind for the extra point. ... But I want to help my team any way I can. It's my job to go out there and make them." Playoffs FROM PAGE 1 McCartney (offense) and Joe Scola (offense). Henry is among four former as- sistants already hired elsewhere, the others be- ing Chris Foerster (offen- sive line; Miami Dolphins), Tony Sparano (tight ends; Minnesota Vikings) and Clancy Pendergast (line- backers; USC). No staff additions have been announced, nor has the 49ers confirmed which assistants are being retained, a group that in- cludes defensive coordina- tor Eric Mangini, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, running backs coach Tom Rathman, co- linebackers coach Jason Tarver, offensive line assis- tant Eric Wolford, special teams assistant Richard Hightower and defensive assistant Mick Lombardi. Mike Vrabel, a line- backer on the New Eng- land Patriots' Super Bowl- winning defenses in the early 2000s, was to inter- view Tuesday for the 49ers defensive coordinator role, according to Bleacher Re- port. Vrabel has been the Houston Texans lineback- ers coach since 2014. Also, the 49ers have talked with Hardy Nick- erson about being their linebackers coach, NFL Network reported. Nick- erson served in that role the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Bucca- neers after stepping down as Bishop O'Dowd High School's coach. Other pertinent talking points for Kelly on Wednes- day, beside his staff, will be his perceived cold relation- ships with players, whether Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert fit his ide- als for a quarterback, and how the 49ers can reverse course after a 5-11 season under former coach Jim Tomsula. Baalke and York were also present a year ago when they introduced Tom- sula as Jim Harbaugh's suc- cessor. On Friday, the 49ers posted pictures of Kelly, Baalke and York touring Levi's Stadium. Kelly's former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, in- troduced Doug Pederson on Tuesday as their new coach. Pederson said his staff will include at least two from Kelly's regime: special teams coach Dave Fipp and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Pederson also an- nounced Jim Schwartz as his defensive coordinator, a role that had been held by Billy Davis. Vrabel, 40, has never coached nor played under Kelly, and he's best known for his time on the Patriots from 2001-08. Mangini was Bill Belichick's defensive backs coach from 2000-04 and defensive coordina- tor in 2005 before coach- ing the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. After a 14-year play- ing career, Vrabel entered the coaching ranks at his alma mater, Ohio State, where he coached lineback- ers and the defensive line from 2011-13. He's been the Houston Texans lineback- ers coach the past two sea- sons. Of the NFL's seven new coaches hired this month, Kelly is the last to be in- troduced to the media. He was the third hired, be- hind the Miami Dolphins' Adam Gase and the Cleve- land Browns' Hue Jackson. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 BOB LEVERONE — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly watches the action from the sidelines in a game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina. set ... more aggressive than me. He took more risks than me, and he won. Prob- ably he deserved." No. 2 Simona Halep and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams also went out in the first round on Tuesday, when a series of upsets took some focus off a match-fixing controversy that had over- shadowed the first day of the season's first major. Halep, the 2014 French Open finalist, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Zhang Shuai, giving the No. 133-ranked Chinese qualifier her first win at a Grand Slam after 14 losses. "It's OK. I don't want to make this match like dra- matic," said Halep, who re- fused to blame an Achilles tendon problem for con- tributing to her third first- round loss in five years at Melbourne Park. Verdasco went for ev- erything on his ground strokes, ripping 90 winners against only 37 for Nadal as he worked to the extremes to unsettle his former No. 1-ranked rival. "To win against Rafa here coming from two sets down is unbelievable," the No. 45-ranked Verdasco said. "I think I played un- believable — the fifth set from the break that he made me, I just started hit- ting winners. I don't know how, just, you know I was closing the eyes and every- thing was coming in and I keep doing it and I was do- ing well." Stan Wawrinka, who beat Nadal in the 2014 Aus- tralian final, and four-time runner-up Andy Murray advanced, along with No. 8 David Ferrer, No. 10 John Isner, no. 13 Milos Raonic and Lleyton Hewitt, the two-time major winner who is playing his 20th and last Australian Open tour- nament before retiring. French Open champion Wawrinka was leading 7-6 (2), 6-3 when his opponent Dmitry Tursonov retired with what appeared to be an upper leg injury. After beating Halep, Zhang burst into tears when asked about break- ing the drought. "I think in my life, it's the best tennis," she said. "To win against a top-two player, I'm so happy, so ex- cited." Williams lost 6-4, 6-2 to Johanna Konta, her eighth first-round loss at a major. No. 3 Garbine Muguruza and No. 7 Angelique Ker- ber advanced along with two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Aze- renka.
