ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter REDBLUFF Despiteworries following a state ban in De- cember on Dungeness crab fishing after toxins were found in west coast crabs, the eighth annual St. Eliz- abeth Community Hospital Auxiliary Crab Feed went off without a hitch Saturday. Auxiliary board member Linda Ezzat and St. Eliza- beth Director of Support Services Kristin Behrens welcomed a crowd of about 200peopletotheroom,with Ezzat calling the event a la- bor of love. "It's an act of love to raise funds to do the best we can for the community," Ezzat said. "We're excited to have some of the best crab from Oregon and Washington here. It's a lot of work, but a lot of gratification." Despite the stress caused by the uncertainty of crab availability, the hospital and auxiliary were happy to be able to serve safe crab, Beh- rens said. Saturday's fundraiser is the largest the auxiliary puts on throughout the year, raising about $30,000 on average for the hospital. Purchases from the money raised include items such as hospital beds, surgical hel- mets, life saving equipment, lab equipment and training, Behrens said. There are about 40 vol- unteers in the auxiliary and together they put in about 11,000 volunteer hours last year. While attendance was a little lower than normal, in part due to not know- ing whether the auxiliary would be able to get crab and in part due to the rainy weather, the group hoped to raise about $6,000-$8,000, Behrens said. DEAR MARY Do you know of any way to re- vitalize stamp pads that have dried up? Thanks. — V.B. DEAR V A couple of drops of glycerin, (available in drug and craft stores or online) brushed onto that stamp pad should bring that stamp pad back to life. If it is still dried up after applying the glycerin and allow- ing it to sit for a few min- utes, follow with a spritz of water. DEAR MARY We love your Everyday Cheapskate col- umn! I still have the arti- cle on the table about cut- ting the cable cord, but I wonder if you have a rec- ommendation about re- cording after the cable box is gone? We're not al- ways home to watch live TV and there are some things we would like to watch at a more conve- nient time. Any sugges- tions? And thanks so much for all of your help over the years! — Pat and Richard DEAR PAT AND RICHARD You definitely have op- tions to have DVR capa- bility without having ca- ble TV service. But it's not free. The most popular is TiVO Roamio, which is an over-the-air DVR that comes with two purchase options: Option 1: $88 plus $14.99 monthly fee re- quired Option 2: $415 with lifetime service included (pays for itself after two years). Another option you may wish to consider is the Chanell Master DVR, which you purchase for $299 with lifetime service included (no monthly fee). Thanks for your kind words and loyal reader- ship! It means the world to me. DEAR MARY You recently told us about a commer- cial product to clean the grime off old kitchen cup- boards. I can't find the article. Would you please tell me its name? — Kath- leen DEAR KATHLEEN As I have now recalled (even I have to go back and use the search box at Every- dayCheapskate.com to re- fresh my memory!), I gave you three options: Two make-it-yourself concoc- tions, plus one commer- cial product. To find them again, I searched using the key- word 'grime' and after a few seconds of letting the thing search through thousands of columns, it came right up. The com- mercial product is How- ards Orange Oil Polish. Here are the DIY reci- pes, again: Recipe #1: In a spray bottle (I use 16-oz. spray bottles for homemade cleaners) mix 2 table- spoons olive oil, 4 table- spoons white vinegar and two cups warm water. Shake to mix then spray on one door or drawer front at a time. Scrub with a soft cloth to re- move any dirt, then buff to a beautiful shine. Be- fore each spray, give the bottle a shake to keep the oil mixed in. As long as you don't let this sit for any length of time, that vinegar will not harm the finish. Just spray it on, scrub it well and wipe it off. Recipe #2: In a small bowl, measure out 1 part vegetable oil and 2 parts baking soda (for example 2 tablespoons oil and 4 tablespoons baking soda — or 1 cup oil to 2 cups baking soda depending on the size of your job). Using your fingers, mix this into a thick paste. Smoosh this a little bit at a time into the surface of that grimy cabinet, be- ing particularly mindful of the areas close to the handles that receive so much handling and hu- man contact. Scrub with a soft cloth, sponge or your fingertips to get this paste into the grain. Use an old tooth- brush to get it into all of the nooks and crannies. This paste is very thick, and as you begin to scrub and brush, it will fall off, along with a lot of grime. Save yourself a mess by placing an old towel be- neath the areas you are cleaning to catch it as it falls off. It could get dis- gusting and that's what you want because that signals that you are get- ting rid of it. Buff well with a soft cloth then step back to admire your beautiful work.
