A child of Music City royalty and a former rebel, Pam Tillis was determined to find her own way as a singer and songwriter — and she succeeded. A CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Tillis has writ- ten songs for some of the top singers in and beyond Nashville, including more than a few of her own hits. She knows what it's like to break the platinum barrier, to top the singles charts time and again, to bask in an ovation at her induction as a member of the Opry or play in the intimate hush of the Bluebird Café. Tillis is scheduled to per- form at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at the State Theatre in Red Bluff. Tickets are $39 and available online at statetheatreredbluff.com and at the Tehama Coun- try Visitor Center, 250 An- telope Blvd. and the box of- fice, which will open at 6:30 p.m. STATETHEATRE PamTillistotakethestagetonightinRedBluff The Tehama Concert Series brings the Acoustic Guitar Masters concert to the Red Bluff State Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15. TEHAMA CONCERT SERIES Acoustic Guitar Masters to perform Friday CHICO The Gateway Sci- ence Museum at Califor- nia State University, Chico is pleased to announce the opening of its spring 2016 exhibit, "Grossology," which is based on the best-selling children's book by Sylvia Branzei by the same name. The exhibit opens Saturday, Jan. 16 and runs through May 8. "Grossology: The Impo- lite Science of the Human Body" uses sophisticated animatronics and imagi- native exhibits to explain how a body works — in- cluding its less pleasant functions. Smaller exhibits like "Tour du Nose," "Gas Attack," "Burp Machine" and a climbable replica of human skin offer visitors young and old fun and in- teractive lessons about their bodies and human biology. Several dozen local medi- cal professionals have spon- sored the exhibit, which will occupy the North Gal- lery and James W. Cornyn Valley Gallery. A kick-off celebration planned for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17 will in- clude hands-on activities including the Bean-Boozled Challenge and Making Mu- cus. Activities are free with admission and refresh- ments will be provided. The museum is at 625 Esplanade in Chico and, beginning Jan. 16, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for chil- dren and students, and free for museum members and children younger than 3. For more information, visit www.csuchico.edu/ gateway or call 898-4121. Auditions will be held during the first three weeks of the spring term, starting Jan. 25. The Chorale meets at 7 p.m. Monday evenings in room 638 on the Shasta College campus. Men and women who have some ba- sic musical skill and a de- sire to sing are welcome. The Chorale will be sing- ing a concert of current and emerging composers, featuring works by Shawn Kirchner and Ola Gjeilo. Norwegian composer Gjeilo composed "The Lake Isle" based on the poem of Wil- liam Butler Yeats, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree". The cho- ral music is accompanied by instrumental groups in- cluding strings, guitar and piano. Local guitarist Sage Mitchell, a student in the music department, will ac- company. For further information, please contact Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury, Director of Cho- ral Programs, at 530-242- 2367. REDDING Shasta Chorale to sing great choral works of the 21st century Artist Nathan Cordero will exhibit his artwork Jan.19 through Feb. 25, at the Shasta College Art Gal- lery. There will be an art- ist's lecture, noon to 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29 in room 400 with a reception to follow from 1-3 p.m. in the 300 building. This is a free event and open to the public. Nathan Cordero trolls the land with a metal detector. He mines the flotsam and jetsam that we lose or dis- card and reshapes his find- ings into art. Picture pull- tabs, pennies, a friendship bracelet, and hand-made nails transformed. As cu- rator Renny Pritikin writes, Cordero also "sifts through mass media language for text that resonates," and he "plucks a phrase or en- tire headline from wom- en's magazine covers and incises it into wood ve- neer." Whether sifting through the earth or dig- ging through popular cul- ture, Nathan Cordero un- earths fragments and trans- forms them into an art that reveals something about our past and present. Shasta College Art Gal- lery is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday and 6—9 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
