ByCamInman BayAreaNewsGroup Day 9 of the San Francisco 49ers coaching search led them to a New York sit-down with Tom Coughlin, whose 70th birthday falls just before the sea- son opener. With 49ers CEO Jed York in Houston attending the NFL owners meeting, general man- ager Trent Baalke was dis- patched to meet with Cough- lin, the NFL Network reported. Coughlin stepped down from the Giants last week after 12 seasons that included two Su- per Bowl wins, the last of which came in the 2011 season after they outlasted the 49ers in over- time in the NFC Championship game. Coughlin interviewed Mon- day with the Philadelphia Ea- gles, whose former coach, Chip Kelly, was among the first can- didates to reportedly interview with the 49ers. Following back to back 6-10 seasons and four straight years of not making the playoffs, Coughlin stepped down after a meeting with management. In Coughlin's Jan. 4 farewell from the Giants, he said he was "not necessarily done with coaching." Prior to delivering the Gi- ants two Super Bowl wins dur- ing his 2004-15 tenure, he stew- arded the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002. Coughlin also was a Giants assistant under Bill Parcells, whom Baalke considers a mentor. Baalke and York have con- ducted interviews with six re- ported candidates: Kelly, Hue Jackson (Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator), An- thony Lynn (Buffalo Bills assis- tant head coach), Dirk Koetter (Tampa Bay Buccaneers offen- sive coordinator) and John De- Filippo (Cleveland Browns offen- sive coordinator). Jackson, once considered a front-runner for the 49ers job, completed his second interview in three days with the Browns, they announced Tuesday. He interviewed Sunday with the 49ers and is expected to meet with the Giants. The 49ers took 17 days last season before naming Jim Tom- sula as Jim Harbaugh's succes- sor. Tomsula got fired two hours after finishing this season with a 5-11 record. Armas The Associated Press GREEN BAY, WIS. At their best against Washington, the Green Bay Packers snapped back to the line of scrimmage quickly after a successful play, ready for the next snap. Up-tempo play confounded the Redskins' defense in Green Bay's 35-18 win in the wild-card round, a confidence boost for the Packers ahead of a matchup against Arizona's tough defense on Saturday night in an NFC di- visional playoff game. "We like to move the ball fast," receiver James Jones said after the win over Washington. "When we get a good tempo go- ing, we're hard to stop." That has typically been the case with coach Mike McCar- thy calling the plays and quar- terback Aaron Rodgers taking snaps under center. But with deep threat Jordy Nelson out all season with a knee injury, and the running game chugging along in fits and starts, the once-potent Packers offense has struggled to produce points. They've had spurts of success playing catch-up, such as rally- ing for two touchdowns in the final 7:54 of a 37-29 loss to Car- olina. Late rallies at home against Detroit, Chicago and Minnesota fell short of victory. The 27-23 win over the Lions on the road on Dec. 3 ended with perhaps the Packers' signature play this season — the 61-yard touchdown NFL PLAYOFFS Packersfindsuccessinsettingthetempo Green Bay likes to move ball quickly, next test in Arizona MARK TENALLY — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones (89) is knocked to the turf by Washington Redskins cornerback Will Blackmon (41) during the first half of a playoff game Sunday in Landover, Md. Cheyanne Johnson was the high scorer for the Lady Warriors with 16 points. Laura Keane had a very im- pressive game with 14 points, going 7 for 9 from the floor.
