USA Network canceled the show after one season, and it reportedly came down to the economics of doing another year ... especially since the options on cast members including star Jason O'Mara had expired, so it might have been costly to get them signed up again. Also, more and more now, networks want ownership of their series because of the potential finan- cial benefits — and the NBC Universal-owned USA bought "Complications" from Fox 21 TV Studios, so that likely was a prominent factor in the can- cellation decision as well. Q : I was happy to see "Mary Poppins" again recently. Was Dick Van Dyke still doing his comedy series when he made that movie? — Ruth Ellis, via e-mail A : Yes ... "Mary Poppins" was released in 1964, and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" ended in 1966. In fact, filming on the Disney movie was done between May and September of 1963, so Van Dyke would have been between seasons of his classic CBS sitcom. That wasn't the only time he used a hiatus from his series to make a movie. He reprised his Broadway role in the 1963 screen version of the musical "Bye Bye Birdie"; he was among Shirley Ma- cLaine's many male co-stars in the 1964 comedy "What a Way to Go!"; he starred in the Paris-set 1965 tale "The Art of Love"; and he returned to Disney to play the title role in "Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.," filmed in 1965 but released several weeks after the finale of Van Dyke's series in 1966. Q : It was nice to hear Katharine McPhee sing again on the "Sinatra 100" special. Will she ever sing on "Scorpion"? — Brian Palmer, Columbus, Ohio A : She's done so in very short spurts, but unless a story on the CBS adventure series has to do with the mu- sic industry, it likely seem out of place for her to burst into song suddenly. It's roughly the same situation as with LL Cool J in his many seasons on "NCIS: Los Angeles," but he maintains his ties to music by hosting many Grammy-re- lated CBS specials (including the award ceremony itself, for his fifth consecutive year, on Feb. 15). Similarly, now that she's part of the "family," the network looks for other places it can deploy McPhee musi- cally ... as with "Sinatra 100."
