JANUARY 6-12, 2016 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM This winter, Lake Rim Park offers a fun guided exploration of their parks. "A park ranger will take people on a hike on a trail here, which is about a mile. And they will discuss any animals that you might see and plants along the trail. They are mostly evergreen plants in winter and the park rangers interpret anything they might see, like some of the season's changes. It is fairly leisurely," said Amber Williams, the park ranger supervisor. The park is open all year round, and the public is encouraged to explore the beauty of the area in the winter months. The hikes are scheduled for Jan. 13 and Feb. 10. This hike is intended to be a family- friendly exploration of the park's beautiful trails. It is open for people of all ages. Williams advises, "Some of the smallest kids may not keep their interest, but it's not a very hard walk. Most people are able to keep their strollers with them." For kids, it is a fun introduction to nature. For adults, it is a beautiful stroll exploring the local beauty. It is great family adventure in the great outdoors. Admission is free, but reservations are necessary. There is a group limit and the hikes do depend on the weather. When it comes to the average group size Williams said, "It varies. We might have a couple, sometimes up to twenty. Smaller groups are better because you're more likely to see something and have a good discussion about it." Lake Rim Park has a number of activities and attractions all year long. Williams says her favorite area that park has is, "The overlook of the creek. Never know what you're gonna find. There are lots of evergreens and it stays green for a good part of the year. " Lake Rim Park also has tennis courts, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball courts, athletic fields, natural areas, a Native- American-themed garden, play grounds and numerous activities. All amenities are open to the public and shelters or fields can be reserved. Pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash. The park hours through February are 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Williams says that the park rangers are currently working on planning their fall and summer activities for 2016. These include a lot of adventure activities like hikes and kayaking. They also offer summer and sports camps. Check the website soon for information to plan out an engaging and active summer. Lake Rim Park is an amazing resource for community members of all ages. The winter hikes are on Jan. 13 and Feb. 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Lake Rim Park. The park is located at 2214 Tar Kiln Dr. Admission is free, but make sure to call ahead for a reservation. "Make sure you call the park so we know how many people to expect or if we have to cancel we can call," Williams said. To make a reservation call 910-433-1018.
