York answered questions regarding the announcement that Jim Tomsula has been relieved of his head coaching duties. ByJanieMccauley The Associated Press SANTA CLARA San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is retaining Trent Baalke with the idea that the general manager will hire a new coach and turn around this once-proud fran- chise in a hurry. York made the announcement that Baalke would stay Monday, one day after firing first-year coach Jim Tom- sula after a 19-16 overtime victory against the St. Louis Rams to finish the season. "Trent understands that I'm not satisfied with the current state of this team. Trent's role is to find the next head coach and continue to build this roster and get us back to cham- pionship form," York said in his first public remarks to the media this sea- son. "Trent has the skills to do this and get this done. He's built cham- pionship rosters in the past. He's got respect from folks around the league and his peers." San Francisco went 5-11 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season after going 8-8 a year ago in now-Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh's fourth and final season before what the team called a "mutual" parting. "I think it's well understood what effort we made to keep him here," York said. Harbaugh went to Twitter on Sun- day night after Tomsula's firing with a post reading: "Do not be deceived. You will reap what you sow." Tomsula is owed $10.5 million for the remaining three years on the deal he signed last January, and York said the team would "eat" that money to pay him whatever he is owed and the difference if he receives an assistant job elsewhere for a lower salary. "When you're 5-11, it's not all coaching," Baalke said. "We finished 5-11, which we all know is not good enough, not here." York, who spoke Monday as the NFL moved into Levi's Stadium to assume operational control for next month's Super Bowl, wouldn't say whether letting Harbaugh go was a 49ERS York:BaalkewillremainGM CEO takes blame for miserable season By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA Heading into the off- season with uncertainty is old hat for the Oakland Raiders, who have had nine head coaches and 17 starting quarterbacks during a 13-year stretch of no winning re- cord or playoff berths. With quarterback Derek Carr and coach Jack Del Rio en- trenched in their positions, the questions this offseason sur- round whether the team will play in Oakland or in the Los Angeles area next year. "We'll all find out at the same time," Carr said Monday. "We don't get any inside information. We don't have any right now. The thing that matters, though, is that no matter what's in front of it, we're always the Raiders. No matter what city is put in front of that, we love Oakland. This is where I've played, so I love Oak- land. I love our fans. But I know that Raider Nation is everywhere. It doesn't matter what's put in front, we're always the Raiders." The Raiders are expected to ap- ply to relocate to the L.A. suburb of Carson this week. The players and coaches spent Monday pack- ing up and putting closure on a 7-9 season that featured signifi- cant improvement for a franchise that had just 11 wins the previous three years combined. The St. Louis Rams and San Di- ego Chargers also are expected to apply to move to the Los Ange- les area. The Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. With the New York Giants facing a dif- ficult decision on his coaching future after four straight years out of the playoffs, Tom Cough- lin walked away gracefully, do- ing what was best for him. The Giants gave him 12 years to run one of the NFL's flagship organizations. He delivered two Super Bowls and restored the franchise to the league's elite for a while. It was mutually benefi- cial, and so was the departure Monday when the 69-year-old Coughlin resigned rather than force co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch to fire him. The Giants announced the de- cision one day after the Giants (6-10) capped their third straight losing season with a 35-30 de- feat against Philadelphia, their third in a row and sixth in seven games. "I met with (owners) John Mara and Steve Tisch this after- noon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the or- ganization that I step down as head coach," Coughlin said in a statement. "I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family, and ... the Giants orga- nization." The move may signal the end of a 20-year NFL head coach- ing career for Coughlin, one of 13 coaches to win multiple Super Bowls. It also may not. Coughlin loves to coach and if the right job popped up, who knows? "It is difficult to come up with words adequate to describe the appreciation we have for every- thing Tom Coughlin has done for our franchise," Mara said. "In addition to delivering two Super Bowl titles, Tom repre- sented us with class and dignity, and restored the pride to our en- tire organization. The Bulldogs matched the Tro- jans in the first period but Quincy pulled ahead in the second and third to go into the final frame up 45-37. Despite a strong fourth from the Bulldogs, Quincy held on for the win. Jared Costa was named player of the game for Los Molinos, with 5 points, 2 rebounds and an assist. Tanner Prest led the Bulldogs with 15 points, 5 rebounds and an assist; Aaron Hardy had 10 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals; Alex Russell had 9 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals and Kyle Wood had 8 points, 4 re- bounds, 2 assist and a steal. The Bulldogs (6-7) are sched- uled to play the Portola Tigers (6-5) at 7 p.m. Friday in Portola. The Lady Bulldogs went up early over the Bears, with a 12-6 first period lead, but a huge third quarter for the Bears — out- scoring the Bulldogs 25-5 — put the game out of reach, despite a strong final quarter.
