January22istheanni- versary of the Roe v Wade decision of the United States Su- preme Court legalizing abortions under virtu- ally all con- ditions; it occasions the greatest shedding of innocent blood in Ameri- can history. Although the court attempted to parse between privacy and com- pelling state interests in the welfare of mothers and unborn children, in actu- ality virtually no practice has been prohibited. Even that most gruesome proce- dure — partial birth abor- tion — is legally protected in this country. The big- gest scandal has been the unmasking Planned Par- enthood harvesting and selling baby body parts. With this in view we de- vote January to life and its protection. As January begins the US Supreme Court has agreed to hear challenges to a Texas law that re- quires abortion providers — I hesitate to call them doctors — to have admit- ting privileges at a local hospital before they can provide the end of a tiny human life. California has ordered pregnancy care centers to refer clients for free or low cost abortions before meeting their needs with life affirming ser- vices; lawsuits have been filed against this violation of the First Amendment. Also in California a law- suit is underway against the state's Department of Managed Health Care over its 2014 regulation forc- ing churches and faith- based organizations to in- clude abortion coverage in benefits for workers. Suit was filed after the federal government rejected com- plaints — even though the regulation defies recent Supreme Court rulings that forcing such coverage is unconstitutional. Abortion is not the only life issue. Again in Califor- nia a new law takes effect January 1 that permits so- called physician assisted suicide. This law is a sham from the get-go inasmuch as it has no provisions to safeguard patients from coercion or manipulation, and no serious effort to vet them in terms of men- tal competency. No law- suit has been filed on this one — for patients to have standing in court as in- jured parties they must re- turn from the dead. How- ever, a referendum sig- nature gathering drive is underway to place this measure on the November 2015 ballot. Each of these life issues will be featured in a blog during January. Why? Our nation burst the bonds of colonial captiv- ity under the banner of our Declaration of Inde- pendence. That document — for which our flag is a symbol — declares we hu- man beings have three in- nate and inalienable rights received from our God. They are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our constitution was en- acted to codify a level play- ing field for the exercise of those rights. Life is the first of these because without it the others are mere theory. Americans have taken more than two centuries to understand the impli- cations of our own words. It took a bloody war in which half a million lives were lost to end slavery — the idea that life is val- ued in terms of the skin color that surrounds it. The loss of life in the abor- tion holocaust is one hun- dred times greater and deaths occur on no bat- tlefield, but rather in the mother's womb or — God help us — on the operating table should the baby in- tended to die by those sup- posed to guard its life be born alive. But for Chris- tians — and the practitio- ners of virtually any faith in this case — the stakes are higher. The shedding of inno- cent blood is a fundamen- tal sin in any case. But Christians sworn to fol- low Christ's example and seek His help in following it face a shattering of cove- nant — another of the fun- damentals. In Baptism we enter that covenant, prom- ising to conform our life to His and asking His Spirit to make so what we can- not. In John 5:19 Jesus de- clares He does only what He sees His Father doing; in Matthew 22, Mark 12, and again in Luke 20 Je- sus refers to His Father as the God of the living and not of the dead. He says of Himself in John 10:10 that He came in order that all of us — all of us — might have life and that abun- dantly. In this light there can be no excuse made for the taking of human life except in war or other de- fense of human life. There is good news; the Gospel is always good news. In Luke 12:32 Je- sus tells His disciples it is His Father's good plea- sure to give them and us the Kingdom. That surely includes Kingdom life. He says over and over that the remedy for any sin is to simply come home and ask for a do-over. He gave that do-over to me forty- five years ago with re- spect to the abortions I provided for a couple of friends of mine in trouble. He always does. GODTALK January is sanctity of human life month By Rachel Zoll and Emily Swanson The Associated Press WASHINGTON Ameri- cans place a higher prior- ity on preserving the re- ligious freedom of Chris- tians than for other faith groups, ranking Muslims as the least deserving of the protections, according to a new survey. Solid majorities said it was extremely or very im- portant for the U.S. to up- hold religious freedom in general. However, the per- centages varied dramat- ically when respondents were asked about specific faith traditions, according to a poll by The Associated Press and the NORC Cen- ter for Public Affairs Re- search. Eighty-two percent said religious liberty protections were important for Chris- tians, compared with 61 percent who said the same for Muslims. About seven in 10 said preserving Jews' religious freedom was im- portant, while 67 percent said so of Mormons. Peo- ple who identified with no religion were ranked about even with Muslims in need- ing support to live out their beliefs. Charles Haynes, director of the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum In- stitute, said the findings re- flect deep divisions among Americans about the very definition of religious lib- erty, which has taken on newly politicized meanings in a time of debate over gay marriage and the threat from Islamic extremists. "Religious freedom is now in the eye of the beholder," Haynes said. "People in different tradi- tions, with different ideo- logical commitments, de- fine religious freedom dif- ferently." The poll was conducted Dec. 10 through Dec. 13, after Islamic extremist at- tacks in Paris and San Ber- nardino, California, and during intensifying anti- Muslim rhetoric by Don- ald Trump and other can- didates for the Republican presidential nomination. The furor has led to a spike in vandalism of mosques and harassment of U.S. Muslims over the last month. In the survey, 88 percent of Republicans said it was important to protect the re- ligious liberty of Christians, while only 60 percent said so for Muslims. Democrats also ranked religious free- dom for Muslims as a lower priority. Eighty-three per- cent of Democrats said the protections were important for Christians, while only 67 percent said so for Muslims. A Pew Research Center survey last year found an increasing share of Ameri- cans believe Islam is more likely than other religions to encourage violence among its followers. Sev- eral outspoken critics have emerged who argue Islam itself is a threat to the U.S. "These numbers seem to be part of a growing cli- mate of anti-Muslim senti- ment in the United States," said Madihha Ahussain, an attorney for Muslim Advo- cates, a California-based civil rights group. "This cli- mate of hatred has contrib- uted to dozens of incidents of anti-Muslim violence in recent weeks." Helen Decker, 65, a West Texas Christian who reads the Bible regularly, believes strongly that religious free- dom should be provided to people of all faiths or no faith, including for her grandson whom she said is an atheist. But she said Muslims can only earn the same religious liberty pro- tections "under certain cir- cumstances — that they can show that they are not a radical Muslim." "Muslims — they need to be protected just like Christians, unless they pose harm to human life," Decker said. But John Ashford of Chi- cago, who is retired from the U.S. military and the Postal Service, said "it's not right" to deny religious liberty protections to Mus- lims. He said officials have been showing too much def- erence to Christians for po- litical reasons, in what he considers a threat to the separation of church and state. "There's supposed to be equal protection under the law — that's what the Con- stitution says," he said. "If you're not doing that, you're doing something wrong."
