Setting it straight A headline in Thursday's edition contained an Though I am far from perfect, I con- sider myself a reformed mean girl. Being a mean girl means that I have firsthand knowledge of what motivates mean girls. When I was in elementary school I became mean by being teased. I retaliated against people that I felt picked on me, made fun of my clothes or judged me. I used being sarcastic and mean as a way to defend that inner part of me that didn't understand why I wasn't up to the standards of others. In high school, I developed a "what are you looking at" attitude. I wasn't overtly mean per se, but if I thought you thought you were better than me, it was on. I spent a lot of time in high school resenting people for no particu- lar reason and without much insight as to why. I was a girl from Cowboy Cor- ner and I didn't like Jock's, Prep's or Bleacher Creatures unless we were already friends from grade school. As a young adult in a small com- munity, I struggled exponentially with self-image and a mean girl spirit. I was overweight from having children and had a victim mentality from my child- hood. I simply did not have the inner skill set to admit that I was a participant in how my weight ballooned or how my interpersonal relationships weren't what I wanted. I was a jealous person who envied other people and because I had jacked up belief systems about myself, I justified my thoughts, feel- ings and actions even though they were rooted in crazy thoughts. Thank God that in my early thirties, I truly looked within and made the decision to change my life in every way possible. I had had enough of the poor me, not my fault, I was an abused child crap. I had enough of the excuses about why I was overweight, under employed or couldn't play well with others. None of the excuses were changing my reality. I saw clearly that no matter what I had been subjected to as a child, I was responsible for how I behaved as an adult. No matter how little nurtur- ing I received as a child, it didn't exempt me from being loving as an adult. I guess I got tired of doing the same things, expecting different results. Faydra Rector You Matter In order to stop being mean I had to make choices daily to enforce my plan. I had to cut other mean girls out of my life. I had to walk a walk and not engage in mean girl behavior. I had to say I am sorry to peo- ple for being mean and I had to forgive myself for being mean. I had to talk to that little girl in my head who was dorky and talked too much and tell her that she didn't deserve to be teased and it was alright to forgive people who have no idea that they shaped her life in a bad way and if they did know now, would certainly apologize. Why you gotta be so mean? You One New Year's resolution changed my life forever. I decided to stop being mean. I decided to stop resenting oth- ers, feeling jealous or indignant. My success story spiraled from that point on. Each year I shed more and more of my mean girl persona until I realized one day in my forties that I know that I am no longer a mean girl. I don't have to be mean to feel good about myself. I don't have to deny you your awesome- ness to covet mine. I don't have to negate your good fortune, discipline or success to make mine seem important. don't. You don't have to hate, you don't have to be jealous, you don't have to resent what others have. You don't have to always win and you don't have to always be right. You don't always have to have the last word or use negativity to make your point. You don't have to be so mean. Martin fixed April 14 as the approximate date when Jim Jelly, an Indian, said to have been at least 100 years old, was cremated during the fire that destroyed his cabin on the Hatch ranch in the Cotton- wood district, in northern Tehama county. The charred bones of the aged Indian alone remained as mute testimony to the terrible suffering he must have endured as his home burned and he could not extri- cate himself from the flames.
