He's been a di- rector before, on the true-sto- ry movies "Antwone Fisher" and "The Great Debaters" (both of which he also starred in), but this will be the first time he'll have done that job in roughly eight years. The Melissa McCarthy-Billy Gardell sitcom also has had a midseason start the past couple of years, which we remain at something of a loss to explain, given the movie popularity McCarthy also has now. The show has been pretty much a sure bet for the network, since it always deliv- ers steady if not blockbuster ratings, making it nice securi- ty to have in the back pocket programming-wise. One catch is that with the addition of "Supergirl" on Mondays this season, CBS had two fewer slots for half-hour comedies than it used to. However, the new Wednesday schedule opens up two more such slots, along with the existing four on Thursdays (one of which will belong to Jane Lynch's new "Angel From Hell" starting Jan. 7, and another to the re- turning Matthew Perry-Thom- as Lennon reboot of "The Odd Couple" in April). Q : Was Jamie Lee Curtis' recent shower scene on "Scream Queens" meant to be a tribute to the one done by her mother, Janet Leigh, in "Psycho"? — Gary Paul, Lakeland, Fla. A : Most certainly. Fox was not at all shy about pro- moting the scene in advance, and it was very clear that the "hook" was meant to be its thematic relation to the one so famously done by Leigh for director Alfred Hitchcock. Even if Curtis wasn't in the show's cast, executive pro- ducer Ryan Murphy and his creative colleagues might have done such a scene any- way ... but since they initially said they wouldn't even make the series without Curtis, you can pretty much go to the bank on the thought that the moment was a completely in- tentional "Psycho" homage.
