By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTA CLARA While Jim Tom- sula insisted Wednesday that "there's nobody that overlooked anybody" in the 49ers' latest loss, Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine suggested other- wise. Pettine questioned the 49ers' approach while reflecting on the Browns' 24-10 win. "I thought you saw one team that wanted to be out there, wanted to compete, wanted to win a football game, and I don't know that I sensed that same attitude from the other side," Pettine said Wednesday in his press conference, Browns.com reported. The 49ers (4-9) created a stir after that loss when a few vet- erans, including left tackle Joe Staley, said their teammates may have taken the Browns lightly. "There's nobody that over- looked anybody. That's very clear," Tomsula added. "There's been some (up and down play) and that's what we have to get away from." After back-to-back away games dropped their road re- cord to 1-5, the 49ers return to Levi's Stadium on Sunday to host the Cincinnati Bengals (10-3). Safety Eric Reid, for one, is not taking lightly his former college nemesis, A.J. McCar- ron, the Bengals' fill-in starter at quarterback for Andy Dal- ton (fractured thumb). Reid, an LSU product, expects a big chal- lenge from McCarron, who's try- ing to become the first ex-Ala- bama quarterback to win an NFL game since Jeff Rutledge in 1987 with the New York Giants. "He's won three national ti- tles, so he knows how to run an offense," Reid said. McCarron was just a redshirt freshman on Alabama's 2009 team that won the BCS, but he indeed started in their 2011 and 2012 championship seasons. "I think he's looking to prove something: he might not be thrilled with where he got drafted," Reid said of McCar- ron, a 2014 fifth-round draft pick. "And we're the people he's going to want to take that ag- gression out on." Rookie wide receiver DeAn- drew White, an Alabama prod- uct, also testified on McCarron's behalf, saying: "He knows what he's doing. He can read cov- erages. I can't say a bad thing about A.J. He was a good quar- terback for me." McCarron was a youth-foot- ball teammate of 49ers nickel back Jimmie Ward, and they won multiple championships together, McCarron recalled on a conference call with Bay Area media. Upon replacing Dalton, Mc- Carron went 22-of-32 for 280 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which resulted in a pick-six. McCarron noted Wednesday how the 49ers have "played everybody tough" at home this season and that "their D-line gets after it." Outside linebacker Corey Le- monier, an Auburn product, says the 49ers must keep McCarron in the pocket and pressure him. That was the 49ers' failed plan Sunday when they got beat by a different quarterback from that 2014 draft class, Johnny Man- ziel. Meanwhile, 49ers quarter- back Blaine Gabbert has moved on from last Sunday's collapse, which included nine sacks that matched a franchise record. "That's the beautiful thing about the NFL: You've got a game in seven days and you can't spend too much time on the previous game," Gabbert said. By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA The sacks that had eluded Khalil Mack in a strong season for the Oakland Raiders are no longer missing. They're coming in bunches in- stead. Mack had a franchise record- tying five sacks in last week's up- set win in Denver in a dominant performance to cap an impressive three-game stretch that has dis- played all of Mack's abilities. The strength to overpower tackles who outweigh him by more than 50 pounds, the speed to get around those lumbering blockers and the developing rep- ertoire of moves that help him get to the quarterback have made Mack one of the most feared de- fenders in just his second year in the league. "Hard work pays off," Mack said Wednesday. "You go out and you work on your craft every day and every week, so when you see it working on the stat sheet, it's pretty cool to see." With nine sacks in the past three games, Mack has moved into the NFL lead with 14 on the season and is two shy of tying Der- rick Burgess' franchise record set in 2005. This recent barrage has come after fellow pass rusher Al- don Smith was suspended, which should have helped offenses focus on Mack.
