DN Staff Report Behind a career-high 31 points from freshman Lily Brose, the Red Bluff Lady Spartans had another Eastern Athletic League upset with- in reach, Tuesday, but once again came up just short. The young Spartans (5-11, 1-3) found themselves leading at Pleas- ant Valley (11-3, 3-1) at the end of the third quarter, but the Vikings rallied for a 58-51 win helped by an improbable 3-pointer. It was the Lady Spartans third close loss in two weeks, after hav- ing EAL foe Enterprise and Lassen also on the ropes. Red Bluff had erased a four- point deficit in the third period after switching to man-to-man defense when they were able to outscore the Vikings 16-9. A back-and-fourth fourth quarter led to the game being tied with two minutes left when Pleasant Valley post player Allison Grant banked in a 3-pointer. Roxy Luppino cut the lead to two points with a free throw with 33 seconds, but the Lady Spartans would get no closer as the Vikings made five free throws down the stretch. Brose's 31-point performance came off of four 3-pointers and 7- for-12 shooting from the free throw line. Alana Hinkston led the rest of the Lady Spartans with 12 points. Red Bluff travels to Foothill, today, to take on the a Cougar team with just one win over Oroville in the EAL. Los Molinos The Los Moli- nos boys basket- ball team rallied back from an early 10-point deficit, but fell in overtime to Williams 66-63, Tuesday, in its Mid-Valley league opener. The Bulldogs were down 21-11 at the end of the first quarter, but came back behind 19 points from Eric Blanchard. Ryan Mekech recorded a dou- ble-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Conrad brothers, Jc and Sean each added 12 points. Jc also had six assists. The Bulldogs (8-9, 0-1) travel to Hamilton, Friday. Lady Bulldogs The Lady Bulldogs had little trouble, Tuesday, and cruised to a 73-38 win at Williams in their league opener. Samantha Andrews drained three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 23 points. Kiersten Seaman shot 7-for-10 from the free line and finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Carolyna Salazar added 14 points. Los Molinos, (4-9, 1-0) play at Hamilton, today. Raiders interview potential assistants ALAMEDA (AP) — Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has started interview- ing potential assistants for next season even while he continues to mull the fate of coach Tom Cable. ESPN.com reported the Raiders interviewed Balti- more Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson about becoming the team's offen- sive coordinator. NFL.com reported the team interviewed recently fired New York Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle, who held the same position in Oakland in 1998-2003, to replace Dwaine Board as line coach for the Raiders. ''A lot of people have called inquiring about coaching positions,'' senior executive John Herrera said. Both Jackson and Wau- fle worked on the staff at California with Cable in the 1990s, and Jackson was offensive coordinator at Southern California under current Raiders quarter- backs coach Paul Hackett. Herrera denied a report in the San Francisco Chron- icle that Davis has inter- viewed Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman as potential coaching candidates. Fassel and Trestman are former Raiders assistants who have been mentioned as possible successors to Cable if he is indeed fired. Fassel, whose son John is special teams coordinator in Oakland, was an assistant with the Raiders in 1995 and led Las Vegas to the inaugural UFL champi- onship last season. Fassel told SIRIUS XM Radio that he has not inter- viewed for the job. ''I think if a coach is in place you don't start calling somebody and seeing if the job is open or not,'' Fassel said. ''Tom Cable is the coach. ... I follow the Raiders pretty closely because my son is coaching there and I coached there at one time. But, no, I'm not lobbying for any job. I'm not lobbying for the Raider job. I have never in my life rooted for a coach to be let go so there's an opening. I never have. I'm in the same fraternity. I just got my nose to the grindstone. I'm down here in Vegas working on getting situated down here and that's where I am. Nobody's reached out to me.'' Trestman, who was offensive coordinator in Oakland in 2002-03, has spent the past two seasons coaching the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. He took the Alouettes to the Grey Cup final in his first season and won it this past year. Cable's status is in ques- tion after he went 5-11 in his first full season as coach and failed to develop JaMarcus Russell into a legitimate NFL quarter- back. Cable is 9-19 since replacing Lane Kiffin early in the 2008 season, leading the Raiders to their NFL- worst seventh straight sea- son with at least 11 losses. Cable has pointed to the team's improvement after Russell's midseason bench- ing as proof that he deserves another year to get the Raiders back to the play- offs. Herrera said Davis and Cable have talked exten- sively since the season ended, with many of those discussions coming by phone. ''Most of the characteri- zations of Al Davis' meet- ings with the head coach being short or brief are not true either,'' Herrera said. ''Mr. Davis has had meet- ings of some depth with the head coach. There have been meetings and meet- ings of substance.'' MCT file photo The uncertainty surrounding Tom Cable isn't stopping Oakland Raiders Al Davis from interviewing potential assistant coaches. Jackson nursed a troublesome back for much of the sea- son. Gore will join three teammates in the Jan. 31 game in Miami: tight end Vernon Davis, punter Andy Lee and line- backer Patrick Willis — giving the team its most Pro Bowlers since sending six after the 2002 season. Gore is headed to his second Pro Bowl after also going in 2006. He ran for 1,120 yards and matched a franchise record with 10 rushing touchdowns for the Niners (8-8) this season. He also caught three TD passes. Oakland Raiders long snapper Jon Condo was added to the AFC Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday. UFC's Lesnar eyes return (AP) — Brock Lesnar is ready to resume training to defend his UFC heavyweight title after a serious intestinal problem derailed his career and endangered his life. Lesnar hasn't been in the octagon since UFC 100 last July, when he beat Frank Mir in the biggest event in mixed martial arts history. He struggled through several months of pain and confusion with an illness eventually diagnosed as diverticuli- tis. UFC president Dana White expects Lesnar to return this summer, likely fighting the winner of Mir's March 27 bout against Shane Carwin in Newark, N.J. ''Everybody has got life-changing experiences, and this is one of them for me,'' Lesnar said in a phone interview Wednesday. ''I believe things happen for a reason. It gave me a different perspective on life and my family. I considered myself a healthy human being, and for something like this to happen to me, I need to re-evaluate. I have to make some changes.'' After just four fights over less than two years with UFC, Lesnar is considered the league's top pay-per-view draw. The former NCAA wrestling champion and WWE professional wrestler is thrilled to resume his MMA career after thinking he might be forced to retire by major abdominal surgery. ''The heavyweight division should be back on their toes again,'' Lesnar said. He spent several months struggling with diverticulitis, a swelling of pouches in the intestinal wall. Lesnar said he had abscesses in his intestines that became infected — and he also apparently tested positive last fall for mononucleosis, which might have delayed getting the proper diagnosis of his intesti- nal woes. Lesnar withdrew from his scheduled fight against Carwin at UFC 106 last November, but didn't yet know why he was exhausted and losing weight. Although Lesnar is vague about the dates and locations of his health woes' progression, he lost 40 pounds and eventually had a major scare while at a hunt- ing lodge in Canada, when he became delirious and passed out from pain while at least three hours from medical treat- ment. White said Lesnar will return in the summer, giving a boost to the ever-growing company after a series of injury postponements and cancellations over the past several months. If an injury prevents the winner of Mir's bout with Carwin from being ready, Lesnar is likely to fight the winner of a Feb. 21 bout in Australia between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
