CORNING CHAMBER Ch ri st ma s mi xe r was a lovely evening Raley's Family of Fine Stores donated more than 12,500 turkeys, chickens and hams — which will serve 65,000 individuals throughout Northern Cali- fornia and Nevada. Each of the 114 Raley's, Bel Air and Nob Hill store locations within the chain has made a $1,000 dona- tion of meat to benefit lo- cal food banks — totaling more than 81,000 pounds of nutritious protein. Do- nations from the Red Bluff store will go to the Salva- tion Army in Red Bluff. The donation was pre- pared at the Raley's Distri- bution Center in Natomas for delivery to stores chain wide for food bank pick-up- the donations stay locally in the community of each in- dividual store. Hunger is a growing problem in the United States and it knows no boundaries. It is esti- mated that 1 in 5 kids in the United States is with- out consistent access to adequate food. A recent report revealed Califor- nia's child poverty rate — 27% — is the worst in the nation. Quality, wholesome pro- teins can often be cost pro- hibitive to individuals suf- fering with food insecurity. "Access to healthy food is important for all fami- lies, and this meat dona- tion provides protein and hard to get nutrients, like iron and zinc, to those who need it," said Emily Satraze- mis, Raley's corporate dieti- cian. "By providing a whole- some and high quality pro- tein to these families, we can add balance and nutri- tion to their dinner table." Raley's has partnered with local food banks to provide the meat donation at a time when food banks are at their greatest need for donations. Raley's ab- sorbs all administrative fees to ensure that 100 percent of donations go di- rectly to local food banks. Each agency distributes the meat donation to the hungry in that neighbor- hood, so contributions re- main in the community of each store location where the donation was made. DONATION Grocery chain gives to local food banks The Downtown Red Bluff Business Association sponsored a downtown Christmas Shopping Spree Dec. 4-6. Customers visited any of the several participat- ing businesses on those days to have their shop- ping spree cards signed and turned in. First prize was a $300 shopping spree at partic- ipating downtown busi- nesses and second prize was a gift basket filled with donated items, including artwork, from downtown businesses. First prize went to Ash- ley Stevens and second to Lillie Chrisman. More than 40 down- town businesses partici- pated in the first Holiday Open House, which was a great success with more than 575 entries. Families enjoyed a ride around downtown in car- riages and more than 90 children were treated to a visit with Santa and made holiday gifts. The Tehama County Li- brary staff members, who were the grand marshals of this year's Christmas pa- rade, hosted story time to more than 50 children. RETAIL Shopping spree brings customers downtown CONTRIBUTED From le , Wilma Petrzelka of Crystal Art & Apparel, Jessie Woods of The Gold Exchange, first prize winner Ashley Stevens, second prize winner Lillie Chrisman, Cathy McFann of Shear Harmony Salon and Rita Ramsey of Gary Ramsey Jewelers.
