ByDanElliott The Associated Press LONGMONT, COLO. A pow- erful late-autumn storm dumped up to 24 inches of snow in the Colorado moun- tains on Tuesday before barreling onto the plains, prompting airlines to can- cel 425 flights at the Den- ver airport and leaving hun- dreds of miles of highways slippery with snow and ice. The snow tapered off Tuesday afternoon as the storm moved northeast, leaving behind drifts up to four feet high. "It's going to be western Nebraska's turn next," Na- tional Weather Service me- teorologist Todd Dankers said. "It's going to end up eventually in Minnesota." It was the first big storm of the season for most of Colorado and Utah. Schools closed in some towns in at least four states. Some flights at Denver International Airport were more than four hours late after at least seven inches of snow fell there, airport offi- cials said. More than 600 miles of Colorado Interstate high- ways were snowpacked or icy, and gusts as strong as 58 mph left near-whiteout conditions in isolated areas of Colorado's eastern plains, Dankers said. Few high- ways were closed, however. A snowplow slipped off a highway in the foothills west of Boulder early Tues- day and landed up-side- down in a creek, but the driver wasn't injured. The accident happened at about 4:30 a.m. in Boulder Canyon, said Amy Ford, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transporta- tion. Nothing spilled from the truck into the creek, she said. The cause of the acci- dent was under investiga- tion. The wind piled up drifts three to four feet deep in the small northeastern Colorado town of Merino. Schools and the town of- fices were closed but some businesses opened as usual. "I think we're just more used to it," said Jada Gett- man, owner of Grandpa's restaurant in Merino, which was open. "The snowing and blowing doesn't affect us as much." About 24 inches of snow fell in the west-central mountains near McClure Pass, the National Weather Service said. The town of Larkspur, in the foothills north of Col- orado Springs, reported 17 inches of snow, and cit- ies along the north-south Interstate 25 corridor re- ported up to a foot. Farther east, the Colorado plains re- ceived four to eight inches of snow. The storm struck Utah before moving into Colo- rado, leaving about a foot of snow in the Salt Lake City area and more than two feet in other places. The Utah Highway Patrol worked more than 400 acci- dents over the last two days as people struggled to get to work and school on icy, snow-packed roads. The storm left a foot of snow in parts of Wyoming and Montana, leaving icy highways. School kids in Billings, Montana, the state's largest city, got their first snow day in more than 25 years. Parts of Interstates 25 and 80 were closed in Wy- oming, but travel was a lot more fun in Yellowstone National Park, where re- cent snow allowed the park to start welcoming snow- mobile and tank-like snow- coach traffic. STORM By Kristin J. Bender and Scott Smith The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO A child abuse investigation led to the bodies of two young children inside a commer- cial storage unit in North- ern California, along with a starving, injured 9-year- old at a house about 140 miles away, authorities said Tuesday. The 3-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy were found dead Friday at a storage facility in Redding, a city of 91,000 about 300 miles north of San Francisco. Homicide detectives were investigating, and autopsies were planned for Wednesday. The children's names were not released. The investigation began with a call about a possi- ble child abuse case in the small Northern California town of Quincy. On Friday, authorities found the starving 9-year- old at a Quincy home, ac- cording to a news release from the Plumas County Sheriff's Office. The un- identified girl was taken to a hospital. No details on her condition were avail- able Tuesday. Sheriff's officials later arrested a 17-year-old boy and 39-year-old woman on abuse allegations related to the 9-year-old. Each re- mained jailed Tuesday on $1 million bail. The two were being held on suspi- cion of felony child abuse, torture and mayhem. Attorneys Douglas Prouty, who represents the 39-year-old, and Rob- ert Zernich, who repre- sents the teen, both de- clined to comment. The Associated Press typically does not identify abuse victims; it is not naming the teen or the woman be- cause their relationship to the children is unclear. The investigation then led authorities about 140 miles northwest, to the Redding storage facil- ity where they found the bodies. A woman who an- swered the phone there Tuesday declined to com- ment. Redding Police Lt. Pete Brindley wouldn't say whether the two chil- dren were killed in the storage unit or elsewhere. No other details were re- leased. Meanwhile, south of San Francisco, authori- ties searched a home in Salinas, where the teen and woman recently lived. They did not say whether they found any- thing.
