BOYS BASKETBALL CardinalsknockedoutbyMesaVerde Spartans lose to Arcata then win against Hoopa Valley to earn split in Arcata tourney By Daniel Brown Bay Area News Group SANTA CLARA Still stinging from a humiliating defeat in Cleveland, the 49ers learned Monday that a knee injury will likely prevent left guard Alex Boone from returning this sea- son. "A huge blow," left tackle Joe Staley said, "I've been right next to Alex all year and he's done a great job for us. ... It's a bummer situation for him to go down at the end of the year." The 49ers did not announce the official results of Boone's MRI exam, but a league source said it's an MCL issue that, while not devastating, should be enough to keep Boone off the field for the team's final three games. San Francisco's offensive line already looked overmatched in a 24-10 loss to the lowly Cleve- land Browns on Sunday, a de- feat so listless that even 49ers players questioned their effort level. The Browns sacked quar- terback Blaine Gabbert nine times and outgained the 49ers 481-221 in total yards. Remark- ably, more than one player from the 49ers (4-9) suggested their problems may have stemmed from overconfidence. "Maybe we did take them a little light," linebacker Ahmad Brooks said after the game. "We got the win last week and maybe we got a little big headed." Jim Tomsula, aware of such comments, rankled at the no- tion Monday upon the team's return to Santa Clara head- quarters. "We have no right to overlook anyone," the head coach said. The 49ers have an NFL-worst minus-127 scoring differential as they prepare for the arrival of the Cincinnati Bengals (10-3) this Sunday. Andy Dalton, the Bengals star quarterback, sus- tained a season-ending broken thumb over the weekend. That means the 49ers are likely to face backup AJ McCar- ron. But the team now knows it is in no position to breathe easy. "I felt like in the (Cleveland) game, we just didn't give our best effort," Staley said Mon- 49ERS Booneexpectedtomissfinalthreegames By Jeff Larson and Staff Reports jlarson@paradisepost.com OROVILLE Baylie Fryar said she's never suffered a sports injury, so when the Corning High senior went down in the first half of Sat- urday night's championship of the 38th Duard Millet tournament hosted by Oroville, she didn't re- ally know what to expect. "I never have felt that before," Fryar said. "When I was in (the locker room) I was like, 'What's the score? Can I go play?'" All she wanted to do was re- turn to the court as fast as pos- sible, which she did in the sec- ond half and converted a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers to keep Corning within a posses- sion or two before eventually succumbing to Colfax, 39-33 in the day's nightcap. Fryar, who injured her right ankle, finished with 10 points, while fellow senior Kaylee Shoe- maker led the Cardinals (4-4) with 12 points. "My shot had been off pretty much the whole game, but when I got that first one I was like, 'When I get it I'm going to shoot it,'" Fryar said. "I felt pumped." The game was defensive- minded — the second straight for Colfax (5-3) in the tourna- ment — as the Falcons didn't have a lead until the final 0.5 seconds of the third when Courtney Kirkland was fouled by Whitney Armstrong and con- verted 1 of 2 free throws for a 26-25 Colfax lead after 3. The Sac-Joaquin Division IV visitors expanded on their lead in many ways through defense, as 6-foot-1 sophomore Caleigh McClenahan drew a charge on a Corning drive with Colfax lead- ing 30-27 near the midpoint of the fourth. Colfax would extend it to 34-27 before Fryar again answered her team's plea for of- fense with her second 3 from the wing, trimming the deficit to 36-33 with 1:12 left. Corning wouldn't pull any closer as it would turn it over on a key possession down three with under a minute left. Colfax then preserved the game with free throws to walk away with the tournament title. Sophomore Mariah Castle added five points for Corning in the loss. Bay Area News Group The Giants announced Mon- day that they have agreement on a contractwithright-handerJohnny Cueto. Several outlets including ESPN and CBS Sports are report- ingit'sforsixyears at$130million, pending a physical. Cueto,whoturns30inFebruary, is the second free-agent pitched to join the Giants in the past week. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija signed a five-year, $90 million deal with the Giants less than a week ago and was introduced on Friday.
