Though he visited many chapters during the recruitment process, Theta Theta quickly became his favorite. When it came to making the final decision, it was Sigma Chi or nowhere for Doug, and since that moment he has taken pride in being a brother of Theta Theta. As an undergraduate member, Doug dedicated much of his time to preserving and improving the brotherhood of Theta Theta. Doug served as Consul his junior and senior years, which was a demanding task. "It was certainly a lot of responsibility overseeing about 100 18- to 21-year-old men. There was a lot of organization, leadership, and financial budgeting required," Doug said. "It was good exposure learning what people did, and did not, respond to." Doug's early years as a Sigma Chi were not solely focused on his duties as Consul, but on making lasting memories with his brothers. "I remember living in Room 1 with our treasurer. It was at the top of the stairs, so everyone had to walk past it and it became a sort of hangout room," Doug said. He fondly recalls Saturday football games and road trips to South Bend and Columbus—memories he'll never forget. In his years as an alumnus, Doug has remained close to many of his fellow brothers from his years living at 548 South State, often seeing them when they are in the San Francisco Bay area on business. Realizing the large impact Theta Theta made on his life, Doug chose to give back through contributing to the Preserving Our Past, Securing Our Future: 100 Years at 548 South State campaign. "Even back in the late '80s the Chapter House needed a lot of work," Doug said. "I think that the brothers who live there now deserve to live in the best conditions possible and will in turn allow them to take pride in taking care of the Chapter House." Doug hopes that when his brothers read the list of campaign contributors in the newsletter they will become motivated to join their friends in providing a strong future for Sigma Chi. "I hope that everyone who visits Theta Theta will feel inspired to contribute and help spur future generations to give back," Doug said. After graduating with a bachelor of arts in history, Doug attended Northwestern University for his law degree. For several years, he worked as a federal prosecutor, and currently works as an attorney for the firm of Covington and Burling in San Francisco, handling white collar criminal defense and government investigation cases. Doug met his wife, Jill, while attending law school. They have two sons: Matt, 14, and Will, 11. Doug stays active through his sons by biking, hiking, and attending their soccer, baseball, and basketball games. When he isn't spending time with his family, Doug enjoys playing the occasional game of golf and adventure racing. You can contact Doug at dsprague@cov.com.
