That's what's carried us over the top and we want to continue to do those four things." The next team with a chance to beat Golden State will be the Suns on Friday in Phoenix. After that, the Warriors return home to host Sacramento on Saturday. They are 19-4 in the second game of back- to-backs dating to last sea- son, including 4-0 this sea- son. "So far we've been un- blemished and done ev- erything we need to do to get 16 wins. Hope to make that 17 on Friday," said NBA MVP Stephen Curry, who rested the en- tire fourth quarter and still had 24 points and nine assists. "There most likely will come a time we take a loss and have to deal with the emotions of that, just like we have in years past." The Warriors surpassed the 15-0 starts by the 1948-49 Washington Cap- itols and 1993-94 Houston Rockets. Golden State was already the first defend- ing champion to start this well. "Yeah, it's going real well, keep my fingers crossed," Warriors ambas- sador Al Attles said of this special team, gesturing by crossing his fingers on both hands. "I do the best thing: sitting up here watching them. Keep fingers crossed nobody gets hurt and just keep on going." Kobe Bryant was lim- ited to four points on 1-for-14 shooting to match the worst-shooting perfor- mance of his career in a game when he had at least one basket. He figures Golden State might need something to happen to keep things going at some point. "You've got to have some kind of internal conflict thing, keeps the team on edge," Bryant said. "Be- cause if not it becomes so easy you just kind of coast, you kind of fall into a mal- aise." That hasn't been a prob- lem so far. Warriors FROM PAGE 1 Forst also said "we ac- quired Jed to play," so sec- ond base would be the likeliest spot for him to get consistent at-bats. Lawrie moved to second from third, but it wasn't a good fit defensively. The A's thought about putting Lowrie at second base in 2013, but Japanese import Hiro Nakajima didn't pan out at shortstop, so Lowrie wound up there. Suddenly, the A's infield is crowded, particular at third base. "There has got to be a corresponding move, at least you would think so," an American League exec- utive said in looking at the A's move Wednesday. Lowrie, meanwhile, comes back to the A's with mixed feelings. He liked playing for Melvin, but he makes his home in Hous- ton, and did even before signing with the Astros last winter. "I'm disappointed to leaveHouston,"Lowrie, who makes his fulltime home in Houston, told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. "I signed the three-year deal here thinking I'd be here for those three years." Oakland sent mi- nor league right-handed pitcher Brendan McCurry to Houston in exchange for the veteran infielder. Low- rie originally was traded to the first-place A's by the last-place Astros just be- fore the 2013 season began. He now leaves a wild card Astros team to head to an Oakland team that led the AL in losses. To make room on the 40- man roster, the A's put re- liever Daniel Coulombe on the designated for assign- ment list, giving them 10 days to trade him, release him or resign him to a mi- nor league deal. At the same time, start- ing pitcher A.J. Griffin, whose comeback from 2013's Tommy-John-style ligament replacement sur- gery stalled late in the 2015 season, was released. A's FROM PAGE 1 Thompson was an un- drafted free agent out of South Carolina and was among those cut when Tomsula named his 53- man roster, yet Thompson stuck around on the prac- tice squad. He appreciates having the chance to learn from Kaepernick and Gabbert, who have been around the league for five seasons each now. They are locker mates and often have lunch to- gether in the cafeteria at team headquarters. Thompson has watched how both quarterbacks handled a difficult situa- tion when the struggling Kaepernick was benched earlier this month and Gabbert was promoted ahead of leading the 49ers to a 17-16 victory against Atlanta on Nov. 8. "Ever since I got here they've been great to me," Thompson said. "You never know. People always tell you guys won't talk to you when you're a rookie, es- pecially at quarterback. These two guys have been awesome for me, just really nice guys who have helped me. Any question I've had they've helped." In the preseason finale, when the reserves get their most playing time, Thomp- son completed 17 of 25 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns with an interception and two sacks in a 14-12 win against San Diego. That gave him a nice confidence boost going into the year that he could com- pete at this level, albeit in a game that didn't count for anything. "He has done a tremen- dous job and I've tried to take him under my wing and kind of show him the ropes, because coming in as a rookie I know how that went and I was fortu- nate to have veterans kind of show me the way," Gab- bert said. Thompson understands that some quarterbacks benefit greatly from wait- ing their turn and learning behind the scenes rather than being thrust into the pressures of a starting role right away. "At quarterback in particular, repeat expe- riences are huge in the development process," he said. "Seeing guys go through things, certain looks, certain blitzes you might see in a game, and game-planning for cer- tain things, the more of that you can get under your belt and obviously playing is huge." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 "But we know we have the players on this team to make those plays." And that's where it goes back to Cooper, who had two drops Sunday for the third time in the past four games. Pro Football Fo- cus has him second in the league with 10 drops on the season. Cooper didn't shy away from the fact that he's up- set with the drops. Asked if there's danger in being too hard on him- self, Cooper rejected that notion. "If you have one drop, then there's probably a danger of being too hard on yourself," Cooper said, 'but when you have multi- ple, then..." Cooper's voice dropped off. He's acknowledging his mistakes, but also remains a confident player who doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about them. The Raiders also don't want to spend much time harping on the problems, but rather focusing on cor- rections. "He works through it on his own and we make our coaching points that we see," offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. "I've always admired coaches over the years that really helped play- ers that made a mistake, rather than just pointing it out." To Cooper, the solution is simple. "You just have to look the ball all the way through, have strong hands and not try to run before you catch the ball," he said. • David Amerson has played as well as any mem- ber of the Raiders' second- ary not named Charles Woodson. He leads the team and is tied for eighth in the NFL with 12 passes defended, including four on Sunday.
