CoverStory By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it Matt Lauer and Savan- nah Guthrie typically know how they'll spend the first half of Thanksgiving, and the plan is the same this year. After they wrap up their NBC duties on that morn- ing's "Today" show, the co-anchors will head to their perch along the Ma- cy's Parade route as the network gives the 89th an- nual edition of New York's holiday-season-launching event its traditional broad- cast. Al Roker will join his "Today" colleagues from points on the parade's path, showcasing char- acter balloons, marching bands, themed floats and celebrity guests while Lauer and Guthrie are in a perfect spot to introduce musical numbers from current Broadway shows. "This is probably my 12th year or something like that," Lauer says, "but it's amazing how you still get pumped up for it ... especially when you step onto that street on Thanksgiving morning and you see the crowd in the stands and the bands lining up and the Broad- way casts rehearsing. Even though you think to yourself, 'It would be fun to be home with my family on Thanksgiving morning,' you suddenly forget about that completely, and you just can't wait for this spectacle of Americana." Guthrie is newer to the parade, this being her fourth hosting stint, and she deems that role "really fun. I think there's just a certain energy around Thanksgiving, and with everybody out there, there's so much excite- ment in the air. I actually always get a big kick out of how excited Matt gets about the parade; that's really part of the fun for me, but it's just one of those great traditions, and to get to be a part of it is so special." Among those slated for this year's lineup: music stars Mariah Carey, Jenni- fer Nettles, Jordin Sparks, Rachel Platten ("Fight Song"), Andy Grammer, Daughtry and Pat Bena- tar; Cirque du Soleil; the reigning Miss America, Betty Cantrell; chef and Food Network personality Sandra Lee; hockey's Mark and Marty Howe; and the Muppets, sharing their spot with musician Questlove. Represented stage shows will include "Finding Neverland," "Fid- dler on the Roof" and "The King and I." Lauer sometimes has his children with him at the parade, and this is the second Thanksgiving for Guthrie's daughter Vale. "I'm still thinking about whether to bring her this year," her mom admits. "Honestly, it will have to do with how cold it is, but I would love for her to see it. She's little, but I think she would be completely blown away by all the colors and sounds and sights. I really look forward to having her be there year after year." Weather surely is a major consideration for the Macy's Parade, and Lauer has experienced just about every kind. "We have done the parade in light V-neck sweaters, then we've done it in years when it has been raining torren- tially or snowing side- ways. When you think about some of the outfits those marching-band members or majorettes or cheerleaders are wearing, and they're out there marching for some- thing like three miles and they get to Herald Square — and they still have smiles on their fac- es, because now they know they're in front of the cameras — and they can't feel their fingers or toes, it's really incredi- ble." Also slated to be with Guthrie and Roker for the tree lighting on NBC's "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" special Dec. 2, Lauer adds that he and his parade-telecast com- rades still get to have their own Thanksgivings once Santa Claus has made his parade-end- ing appearance and the crowd disperses. "Sa- vannah often goes to be with her in-laws in New Jersey," he notes, "and I head out to be with my family on Long Island. As soon as 12:15 (p.m. ET) arrives, it's a traditional holiday for us." And for Guthrie, there's an added upside to having that day's on-air chores: "You know what's great about it? It gets me out of any cooking duties." "Today's" Savannah Guthrie again co-hosts the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Thursday on NBC. 'Today's' Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie love a parade ...
