TUNEIN By Jon Wilner Bay Area News Group The immediate surroundings — the trenches — will be intensely familiar to Brennan Scarlett: Cur- rent Stanford teammates lined up next to him, former Cal team- mates on the other side of the line of scrimmage. But the environment Saturday will be novel for the first player in the modern era to play football for both schools. Scarlett arrived in Berkeley in the summer of 2011 and started four seasons with the Bears. Be- cause of injuries, he finished none of them. This will be his first Big Game. "It's definitely going to be an interesting day," Scarlett said. "It's personal, but that's not go- ing to change the way I play and prepare." Taking the first two sets 25-11, the Bulldogs had to battle a bit harder in a back-and-forth third set that ended 25-22. The second set didn't start well for Los Molinos when the Lions went on an early run to go up 6-2, but the Bulldogs struck back with a service run from Henna Acev- edo that put them up 13-6. The Lions would continue to give the serve back to the Bull- dogs, who put together a 7-point run by Vanesa Cota and a 3-point run by Rachel Rogers before clos- ing out the set with Sugey Cota serving. The third set remained within 2 points most of the way, but Etna rallied to go up 19-15. The Bull- dogs regrouped to tie the set at 19 and the teams again traded scores until Rogers finished the set with an ace at 25-22. Coach Chas Konopka said the team made some unforced errors that kept the third set close. Konopka singled out Vanesa Cota for distributing the ball well and named Sugey Cota the player of the game. With the win, the Bulldogs will host either No. 5 Durham or No. 4 Quincy at 7 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Red Bluff Union High School.
