a field goal attempt from the 9 missed to keep the game within reach 21-10 with 9:32 left in the third. Forced to pass the ball, the Cardinals found some success, including Alex Da- vila hauling in a 30-yard pass despite being draped with Eagles at midfield. The next two drives the Cardinals were forced to turn it over on downs and the Eagles didn't waste the opportunities, scoring both times to put them up 35-10 with 3:45 left in the third. By the fourth quarter the Cardinals went back to the run but couldn't keep a drive going and the de- fense was exhausted. The Eagles would score twice more for a final of 49-10. "The best part of my life is watching you guys win football games," Studer told the team. "So this is the worst part of my life." But Studer told the play- ers they should be proud of a season that took them into the playoffs and for their performance against a strong opponent. "You went out fighting like warriors," Studer said. "They're a better football team, but we made them prove it. When you go out fighting, I can live with this." On the night, Wy- att Haydon was 11 for 21 through the air for 129 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 15 yards on 2 carries. Fissori picked up 41 yards on 3 carries, Davila had 38 yards on 18 touches and Parker had 29 yards on 4 carries. Davila led the team with 74 yards on 5 catches followed by Parker with 21 yards and a touchdown on 2 catches. Davila recorded 12 tack- les, Arriaga had 6 and Isa- iah Jones 5. Arriaga and Oscar Garcia each re- corded a sack and McCoy pulled in a pick. Gonzalez kicked an ex- tra point and a field goal. West Valley FROMPAGE1 Colin Kaepernick prior to the Nov. 8 game against the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers went on to win 17-16 and Gabbert fared well (15 of 25, 185 yards, two touch- downs, two interceptions). Gabbert's victorious debut didn't prompt Has- selbeck to backtrack from his previous comments. Hasselbeck had said Gab- bert's 2011-13 stint in Jacksonville featured the "worst quarterbacking" he'd seen, and that Gab- bert could not stand in the pocket and take a hit. "His tape in Jacksovn- ville is really bad. Really bad," Hasselbeck said. "He's not a better player than Colin Kaepernick. Maybe Colin is at the point where he's lost con- fidence and is paying at- tention to what people are saying. But they're playing a guy (Gabbert) who's not a better player." Kaepernick made 53 conseuctive starts, play- offs included, before the last-place 49ers benched him. "I don't believe Blaine Gabbert is viewed as a starter in this league," Hasselbeck added. "You're better off coaching up (Kaepernick) and let- ting him work though his struggles, than yanking him out of the lineup." Gabbert, after beating the Falcons, didn't stick it to his critics. "Their opinions are their own," Gabbert said then. "I know the way I play. My teammates know the way I play and everybody's enti- tled to their own opinion. Maybe I don't agree with it, but at the end of the day, they can say whatever they want." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 folded." Throughout much of the game, Minnesota em- ployed two deep safeties and was intent on keeping Carr from striking deep. The Vikings were largely successful, with only a 38- yard jump-and-catch by Amari Cooper getting well downfield. A common tactic against a two-deep zone is to run the ball since the defense doesn't have an extra de- fender in the box near the point of attack. Former Raiders and NFL linebacker Bill Ro- manowski questioned the play selection in his role as an analyst on the CSN- Bay Area Raiders Postgame Live. "You need to be able to win running the football when you've got a seven- man box," Romanowski said. "As soon as you know it's two-deep, you've got to go to the run . . . for some reason the coaches weren't able to feel like they could run the football." The pass-run numbers were skewed after the Vi- kings took a 23-14 fourth- quarter lead with 3:50 re- maining. From that point on, Carr threw 16 passes, completing 11 for 129 yards and an interception. The two scrambles came dur- ing that time frame. Up until passing was a necessity once it became a two-score game, the Raid- ers had 17 runs and 27 passes. Only twice during the game did the Raiders fol- low a running play with another running play. On the first two snaps, Murray gained 1 and 4 yards. In the third quarter, consecutive carries from Olawale, Mur- ray and Olawale resulted in 10 yards and a first down. A 68-yard, nine-play scoring drive in the sec- ond quarter came with a semblance of balance, with Murray gaining 14 yards on one carry and Olawale get- ting 16 on three attempts — five passes for 38 yards, four runs for 30 yards. Del Rio thought much more went into the defeat than whether the Raiders ran the ball enough times. "I thought we were com- petitive," Del Rio said. "We had our shot. we had op- portunities in that game, and in each of the three phases we didn't do well enough to win. I think it was clear there were op- portunities and they were the better team yesterday." Raiders FROM PAGE 1 COLLEGEBASKETBALL Valparaiso at Rhode Island:7 a.m., ESPN2. On the air BEN MARGOT — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert passes against the Atlanta Falcons during the first half on Sunday in Santa Clara. By Curtis Pashelka BayAreaNewsGroup BOSTON Martin Jones is still learning what it takes to be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL. But he's mastered at least one aspect of the job. "It's important to stay even-keeled," Jones said Monday. "Try not to get too high or too low." Jones has had reasons to be on both sides of the emo- tional spectrum through 14 starts. Over the first four games, Jones had a shutout streak of 234 minutes and 33 sec- onds to set a Sharks fran- chise record. More recently, he allowed four goals on 21 shots to Columbus and two goals on three shots to the New York Islanders. Jones is back on another upswing going into Tues- day's game against the Bos- ton Bruins. He had 26 saves in Friday's 3-2 win over De- troit and 30 saves in Satur- day's 2-1 win over Buffalo, which Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said might have been the best Jones has looked this season. "I've felt good over the last few games," said Jones, who was a member of the Bruins for five days before he was acquired by the Sharks on June 30. "Just want to make sure I con- tinue with my practice hab- its, make sure I'm staying on top with the details and stay sharp over this road trip." Mostimpressivewashow Jones performed Saturday on the Sharks' penalty kill, includingaSabres'5-on-3in the first period that lasted 1:25.Jonesmadethreesaves with the Sharks down two men, including a sliding stop on Tyler Ennis to pre- serve what was then a 1-0 lead. "Everything ties to- gether," DeBoer said Mon- day. "If you have that con- fidence in your goalie, you know you can make a mis- take and get away with it, which allows you to play a little more aggressively and do some things that lead to more offense."
