Theneedforblooddur- ing the holiday season is always at an all-time high. Blood use increases due to multiple factors including increased accidents due to winter weather. The need is even greater due to many donors being unable to donate because of illness and vacations. The next blood drive is 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Veterans Memo- rial Hall in Red Bluff, 735 Oak St. and is sponsored by the Emblem Club. When you give blood in November you will receive a free movie ticket for Red Bluff Prime Cinemas. When you give blood in Red Bluff with Blood- Source, that blood will stay local at St. Elizabeth Com- munity Hospital or Mercy Medical Center in Red- ding. Blood collected has helped numerous cancer patients in Tehama County battle and beat cancer. Did you know that 50 percent of blood collected is use for local cancer pa- tients? There is no substi- tute for blood and you can help to save lives. If you would like to help with this important com- munity cause, call Todd Jones at 242-3005 for more information. Donating blood is safe, easy and takes about an hour. Donors must be healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old or 16 with a signed BloodSource par- ent consent form. There is no upper age limit for blood donations. Donors must bring a photo ID and should drink plenty of flu- ids before donating. Po- tential marrow donors can register for Be The Match national marrow registry through BloodSource. Find more information or schedule an appoint- ment by calling 866 822- 5663 or visiting blood- source.org. RESOURCES Veterans services, advocacy groups CONTRIBUTED Stagecoaches played a key role in the settling of the West. The Tehama County Mu- seum will host a special pre- sentation at 1:30 p.m. Sat- urday, Nov. 21 titled "Stage- coach," which will deal with the impact of stagecoaches on the history of the old West. The fourth in a series of historical presentations by noted historian and re-en- actor Lee Dummel, the talk will explore the history, de- sign and construction of the stagecoach. Particular attention will be paid to the skills required to be a "Knight of the Whip," a common reference to the men and women who maneuvered stagecoaches throughout California and across the West. "My specialty is rail- roads, but because of the sequential and parallel histories of the stage lines and the railroads, I'm re- ally looking forward to what Lee has in store for us," said board member Paul Quinn. "If you've ever watched the Rose Parade on New Year's Day and marveled at the skill re- quired to drive and turn the Budweiser team, this presentation will help put that into context. I under- stand that there will even be cameo appearances by such famous drivers as Amy Morrison, Bull Meek and the 'Buckskin Lady.'" Dummel is a member of Trails West and the Oregon- California Trails Associa- tion. As with his previous presentations, Dummel is donating his time and shar- ing his expertise to benefit the museum. Admission to the pre- sentation is free, however Dummel encourages those who attend to help him sup- port the museum with a do- nation. The lecture will be of- fered in the Marty Graffell Annex, the large build- ing behind the main brick structure. Attendees are invited to explore and discuss the mu- seum's exhibits with the do- cents before and after the presentation. The Tehama County Mu- seum is at 275 C St. in the city of Tehama. It will be open regular hours of 1-4 p.m. on Sunday.
