Ontheair Eight-man football was restricted to high schools with an enrollment of 150 or fewer students and Los Molinos generally averages about 175 students. Starting early in the 2013-14 school year, Curry and Konopka attended a total of six meetings to pe- tition to play in the eight- man league. The league considered allowing Los Molinos to play in some nonleague games during the 2015 season, but during the course of the meetings, it was decided to allow Los Molinos to be a member of the eight-man league on a one-year trial basis. "The first season of eight-man football has been a great success, with a record of four wins and five losses overall, and a record of three wins and four losses in league play," Curry said. The season energized the team and students. "Not only that, but we finished the season, the boys had a great time and there is new energy and ex- citement about our football program," Konopka said. For the first time in some years, Los Molinos High School was able to have a traditional home- coming at a football game, complete with a homecom- ing court and class floats. "Students, parents and community members were thrilled to see a success- ful football season," Curry said. The success is spreading to other small districts. "This is not just an is- sue for Los Molinos," Ward said. "Other school districts that are our size are facing the same issues. Because of this, the eight-man league is accepting petitions on a case-by-case application to allow schools slightly larger than the traditional cap of 150 students to par- ticipate in eight-man foot- ball on an individual and year-to-year basis." Leaguestandouts While the team didn't break into the postseason, several Bulldogs made the top five in stat categories for the California South 8-Man league and two led the section. Sophomore Alex Rus- sell finished the season as the receiving leader by al- most double the next on the list, with 388 receiving yards. He was No. 2 in to- tal points with 142 — just 2 points behind Mercy's Al House — No. 3 in rushing yards with 1,404 and No. 2 in interceptions. Senior Jared Costa led the league in sacks with 12, edging out Mercy's Richie Borges, who finished with 11.5. Senior Tyler Winter was No. 2 in the league with 680 passing yards, more than 200 yards ahead of No. 3 House, and tied for No. 2 in total tackles with 103. Kenseth's probation was reduced from six months to the end of the year, but he remains suspended and promised Thursday to race as he always has going for- ward. With Logano qualifying fourth and Jones sixth, they will start nose-to-tail Sunday. Brad Keselowski earned the pole, and will be on the front row with Kevin Harvick, the defend- ing Chase champion who is currently fourth in the standings. Asked if he felt the pen- alties against Kenseth were just, Logano said that wasn't his decision. "NASCAR looked at it the way they needed to, and they made the deci- sion they felt was right," Logano said. "Our chase, we're not out of it by no means. We've got plenty of time to get ourselves back in. I feel confident we can get it done." Logano again stood firm Friday in his stance about what happened when he wrecked Kenseth at Kan- sas Speedway, saying it was a product of both drivers racing hard for the win. Logano won, and Kens- eth needed a victory to ad- vance to the third round of NASCAR's playoffs. "Thatwas aracing thing, what happened in Kansas," Logano said. "That was not the way that you ever want to see a race end. ... But when I look at it, and the more I looked out, it's a racing thing, it just hap- pened. It's unfortunate, but I would understand if the same thing had happened to me." When Kenseth returned to the Martinsville track last week in a wrecked car, he was nine laps down. He drove Logano's car into the wall as Logano tried to pass him.
