2A Daily News – Tuesday, March 27, 2012 Community people&events In conjunction with four other events on May 5, Fiber on the Foot returns to the Tehama District Fairgrounds for its 10th year. This fiber/livestock event is made possible this year thanks to a generous seed grant from Stone- henge Llamas of Napa. What started in Red Bluff ten years ago as an alpaca only event has developed into a multispecies fiber/wool and guardian livestock sale and fiber/wool festival. This year farms from Selma and Rogue River, Fiber on the Foot Ian Kile, you matter Oregon; Weed, Merced, Vacaville and Granada California are joining local fiber farms from Shas- ta and Tehama County. All fiber/wool or guardian livestock producers are invited to participate by calling 529-3298. Local fiber artists will be demonstrating fiber use from all fiber livestock by carding, spinning, and weaving to produce a finished product. Other fiber techniques and uses will be demon- strated. Local fiber/wool enthusiasts are invited to participate in this educational event. Fiber on the Foot will offer shearing and fiber arts demonstrations between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Returning this year to shear alpacas is Chris Kelly of Redding. Schaul's is know for producing quali- ty metal fencing and farm equipment such as stan- chions and feeders for goats, sheep and alpacas. They are always a hit at events as they fill a need for small livestock producers. The Fairgrounds also will be hosting the Arabi- an Silver Buckle Horse Show, Red Bluff Garden Clubs Flower Show, Cinco De Mayo Celebration, 4-H Fur Feathers and Udders. All events are free and open to the public. The Fairgrounds has room for more livestock, agricultural or cultural events to join the mix next year. A man who wants to create a new life for his family in a safe place where his children can grow and be a part of something won- derful. Ian Kile moved to Red Bluff ahead of his family to make a new plan and to start a dream. He came from Washington state where it snows instead of rains this time of year and where his family still lives while he settles into the community. It took a huge amount of courage to leave his wife and two children to start a company. It takes a huge amount of courage to stay when things feel scary and money is tight. It takes a huge amount of stamina to help launch a company that is big on potential and small on start up funds. It takes A huge amount of self-confi- dence to introduce himself to total strangers and promote himself and his ideas. I have had an interesting time watching him integrate into a new life in Northern California. Listening to how he has been welcomed to our town. Seeing his reaction to what we have to offer. Watching him assess if this is what he thought it would be. He has been asking me about schools, attending sporting events and reaching out to people with the service his business pro- vides. Ian has set aside creature comforts for the bigger pic- ture. He sleeps in a borrowed bed and eats whatever is on the menu with a smile and a thank you. Ian inspires me. He helps me appreciate that happiness is a choice. I notice that every day he is happy, polite and eager to please. If he is lonely, home- sick or just plain bored, he sets those emotions aside to be part of the solution and minimize any problems. Powerful in spirit, forgiveness, love and encouragement. Ian is a gift to his family and to this community. Be like Ian Kile. Be Faydra Rector You Matter Ian you matter because you set an example. You are a quiet witness to what a positive attitude can do. As you experience Red Bluff and take in all it has to offer you quietly take the good and the bad. It is more than just having a easy going personality. It is a struggle to give up what makes you happy in the short term in anticipation for glory of the dream. The power lies in the choice to do so. Ian is powerful. kind even when people don't deserve your kind- ness. Be consciously posi- tive. I asked him one time how he managed his posi- tive attitude and he said it is just something he choos- es. Be like Ian, be willing to put yourself out for the investment in your and your family's future. Be like Ian when you find yourself in strange sur- roundings with unfamiliar people, assume the best of them and be looking to make a friend. Officers Are Investigating False Alarm Local officers are investigating the use of a false alarm turned in at 1:30 this morning from box 41, Oak and Madison streets, to which the entire fire department of the city hurriedly responded. Shortly before that hour some men were heard making bois- terous noises on Madison street, and officers are inclined to believe there was some connection between their disorderly conduct and the turning in of the false alarm. —March 27, 1922 Lift in Dave's Honor Courtesy photo Gerber Girl Scout Troop 70138 Celebrate their successful cookie season by Bowling at Java Lanes in Corning on St. Patrick's Day.Troop 70138, which has girls from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade, sold a total of 5,353 boxes of girl scout cookies between all the girls. They will be using there hard earned money to go to 100 fun 100, which is a celebration in Girl Scouts turning 100 years old to be held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on May 5.
