The concert features clarinet and saxophone virtuosos Will and Peter Anderson. Hailing from New York City and called "the future of jazz" by Quincy Jones, Will and Pe- ter perform originals and standards from the Benny Goodman era of jazz. They will be accompanied by Alex Wentz on guitar. Tickets are available at NorCalJazzFestival.com, Old City Hall in Redding, Chico Paper Company and by calling 520-4742. The Nor-Cal Jazz Festi- val began with three con- certs in 2014; two in Red- ding and one in Chico. This year, the festival has grown to include a total of six con- certs including Weaver- ville, Red Bluff, Chico and Redding. In 2016 plans are being made to add Oroville, Dun- smire, Mt. Shasta and Or- land. The goal of this festival is to connect the commu- nities of interior Northern California and promote America's music — jazz. "We have a tremendous wealth of talent in our re- gion and it is our goal to create a path for them to have a vehicle to perform, interact and to reach our community and expose our youth to this wonder- ful American-made mu- sic," Executive Director Ray Laager said. Nor-Cal Jazz Festival is a project of Friends of the Arts, which partners with California Arts Councils in the counties where the per- formances are held. Garcia is the author of two previously published books of poems, "Rain- shadow and Skunk Talk," and "Digging In: Litera- ture for Developing Writ- ers." His poems appear in numerous journals, and have been featured in Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry and Garrison Keil- lor's A Writer's Almanac. After graduating from Red Bluff High School and Chico State, Garcia earned an MFA in Creative Writ- ing from the University of Montana, Missoula. He is dean of language and lit- erature at Sacramento City College. The son of Red Bluff residents Andy and Nancy Garcia, Albert grew up on the family's walnut orchard. His rural roots weave through several poems in this new collec- tion. Other poems deal with memories of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with school ground "cool" when preteen boys test the swag- ger of junior high years, to complex adult experi- ences of marriage, fam- ily and work. One poem captures a sleepless night when a jumble of sounds and memories jar the po- et's mind, including the sting of a missed foul shot in a JV game still vivid 30 years later. Garcia's poems are full of vibrant images that delight, engage and lin- ger long after the page is turned. Because this poet has stopped and paid at- tention, readers do, too. He lives in Wilton with his wife, artist Teresa Steinbach-Garcia. They have three grown children, Anna, Michael and Ben.
