La Paz County- The La Paz County Health Depart- ment will be holding influenza clinics for adults. The Health Department's flu clinic schedule is as follows: Thursday November 5th • Bouse 11:00 – 12:00 pm • Desert Gold 3:30 – 4:30 pm • Quartzsite 6:00 – 7:00 pm Adults in Parker can come to the health department Mon – Thursday on a walk-in basis, but we strongly sug- gest calling first to make sure a nurse is available because we are frequently out of the office this time of year giving shots in the schools or rural areas. We have not received children's vac- cine from the State as yet, but expect to soon. When it is available, we will ac- cept children at the Health Department on Tuesdays from 8:00 – 11:30am and 1:00 – 4:00pm. The Health Dept. will also be offering flu vaccine in the schools as soon as it is available. "We were notified there is a Manufac- turer's delay with Flu Mist this year, but there will be plenty of the inject- able vaccine (flu shots). Flu Mist works especially well for younger children who are understandably more afraid than older children. Because of this, Flu Mist will be given the younger children first, starting with Kinder- garten and working our way up for as long as it lasts. As always, Flu Mist is a live vaccine and can only be given to healthy children with no chronic diseases," said La Paz County Health Department Marion Shontz, Director If you think you have influenza (abrupt onset of fever, muscle aches and pains, cough and/or sore throat), please con- tact your health care provider for in- formation on how to treat symptoms. Though getting your flu shot is the best way to protect against influenza these simple actions can stop the spread of germs and help protect you from get- ting sick: • Wash your hands. Washing your hands often with soap and water or using a hand sanitizer will help protect you from germs. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. • If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his/her eyes, nose, or mouth. Other good habits, such as getting plenty of sleep, engaging in physical activity, managing stress, drinking water, and eating good food, will help you stay healthy in the winter and all year. Hand sanitizer is an inexpensive way to ensure germ free hands and is available at most stores. For more information on the influenza vaccination please contact the La Paz County Health Department at (928) 669-1100. All funds raised will go to the Friends of Quartzsite Food Bank a new Non Profit Org in Quartzsite to help support our food bank. This is a Thrivent Action Team event and thanks to Thrivent al- most every penny taken in will go to the Friends of Quartzsite Food Bank. We are looking for people to enter the competition of the best soup or chowder. This year there will be a People's Choice award and a First Second and Third place award that will be given out to the winners who will be judged by some mem- bers of the Thrivent team coming up from Yuma and a few more selected judges. What is needed is anyone who has a food handlers card to come to the QIA on Friday to cook their soup or chowder, or it can be done outside in an commercial kitchen. The Quartzsite Police Dept have volun- teered to make a pot of something and it would be nice to see a few other organizations or groups to get in the fun and stew something up. We are also looking for vol- unteers to help serve and to set up and clean up after it is over. Last year they raised over $1,200 they hope to do even better than that this year. As a community we can do it if we try hard. Also seek- ing for donations for Raffle items for the Soup and Chowder Festival. Call Pamela Caskey at 603 834 0647 for more information.
